ButterGate: American in Paris says it's ‘weird' to put butter on a sandwich, causing European uproar

You are not alone. My favorite sandwich - the mixte! Definitely French, but ham, cheese, butter on a baguette. Perfection.
Paul does a really great one (I realize that sounds crazy, there's literally nothing to it.) But I feel like I'm in Paris when I eat it.

The baguette jambon beurre isn't the best known French sandwich for nothing. You get one at a boulangerie, then stroll along the banks of the Seine near Notre Dame, in late April or early May when the horse chestnuts are in bloom.

PP please explain "cultured butter", how is it different from the butter sold in the US? I want butter so badly right now

This just reminds me of my long-unsatisfied quest to find President salted butter in the US. And I mean the kind I used to get at Carrefour, not the one in Safeway. It was sold in a round, bell-like container with big flakes of sea salt. Giant had it for a time in their cheese section but I cannot find it anywhere now. Please help if you've seen it!

80s kid here. My mom made me MARGARINE sandwiches, I think they thought it was healthier than butter then, and she often forgot to buy other groceries for lunch.

Think wonder bread with thick globs of margarine. Eating a bite gave me headaches. Abomination through and through.

I’d love to serve that up to this influencer.

Butter and ham(thin sliced quality deli ham) on a baguette! Heaven.
I am from Europe. I even put ketchup on my sandwiches! And I otherwise hate ketchup.

Well, there is no accounting for taste.... however, I do account your taste as horrible. (Tongue in cheek, sad I have to add that since most of dcum is humourless!)_

But it's only very recently that I learned that most Americans don't put butter on their bread.

i remain shook.

Weirdos.

Everything feels unsettling and I question everything now.

Your post is spot on. I was looking for words, shook is correct. When I was diagnosed with dairy allergy in 2019, my world fell apart. It is like being convicted to a life sentence of misery. (again, tongue in cheek for the humorless dcum weirdos!)

What is cultures butter? I am being honest. I am from former Yugoslavia and while I have heard the term, I do not understand what process makes this cultured butter.
Honestly it sounds like a snob thing to say, verifying why most of us from Europe dislike the French, unless you are from the south of France, then we are ok with you.

Well, the butter went to elite schools, participated in cotillion, has traveled extensively, and speaks several languages. Obviously.

It must have! Theeeeze cultured butter is so basic and boring.

For cultured butter, the cream is allowed to ferment or has live bacterial cultures added to it before churning. This results in a fuller flavor than conventional butter. Some call it "cheesy" butter. This WaPo article explains it.

Mustard on sandwich bread sans a butter layer first, is grotesque.

"....the influencer describes something the French do with their sandwiches that apparently Americans do not....."

I'm not French (actually Italian-born) and happen to love butter on my sandwiches - and hate mayo/mustard. Nothing better than a turkey, cheese, butter sandwich! Am I alone here?

Nope, not alone! Butter always.

Huh?? You put a layer of butter down before mustard? And you think that's normal?

YesI do … it’s just a thin layer of each, but yep.
