I'm from the UK and it was one of the clear cultural differences for me. No butter on a ham and cheese. No butter on an egg salad sandwich. Never seen a sandwich in the US (outside of one I've made) with e.g. butter, cheese, and pickle. Would you put butter on your PB&J? On your Italian meatball sub? Your BLT? |
Do you only eat your own sandwiches? Because almost everyone here agrees that this is very uncommon and we've never seen it anywhere in the US. |

I don't like butter or mayo on my sandwiches, unless it's to cook a grilled cheese.

Influencer. Says it all. |

It's not common in the US, in my experience. I've only ever buttered the outside of sandwich bread for grilled cheese. That said, it certainly makes as much sense as mayo. Conversely, I've swapped out butter for mayo on the outside of a grilled cheese, works well.
I think I'll try butter as a sandwich spread out next time I'm trying to get my kids to eat a non-PBJ sandwich. They both refuse to have mayo or mustard, but who really wants a dry coldcut sandwich. It needs something. |
| Butter on what kind of sandwiches? |
Butter on EVERY sandwich. |
My dad put butter on PB&Js but he would eat butter on everything. Even Ritz crackers. I don’t think he’s ever eaten a sandwich with meat on it with butter, though. |
| Americans always cause problems no matter where they go. And so LOUD! |
Until you want our military to help you. |
We don't want your killers. Take them back along with your mayo. |
Before you feel too unsettled, we do but butter on bread, just not on sandwiches. But, I agree. It’s better than mayo |
Go on your Polish or German version of DCUM then |
| Indian married to an American DH and I feel this so hard! We literally start by putting butter first on bread regardless of what else goes on the bread, if anything! Peanut butter, cold cuts, cheese, you name it, any sandwich should always start with butter for me. |
The best pb&j is made on toasted buttered bread. Try it and come back and tell us about it. |
