Video Ads

The vast majority of internet forums are free. I can’t imagine there are enough people willing to pay to make it worth getting rid of these ads.

There would have to be a major change to the site.

IMO, of course.

It'll be like Twitter/X charging its users...

Fwiw, I get these ads popping up here in this forum too. Not even Website Feedback is off limits.

Yeah. That’s a huge negative to coming here.

Yeah. I keep having to click them to go away. I can't see or use the site when they pop up and they pop up every 10 seconds.

Jeff, do you have any idea what kind of subscription model would be sustainable?

Count me in as well. Wish I could just Venmo Jeff and make these top of the screen ads go away.

In a post above I discussed the infrastructure challenges. Quite a bit of development and administrative overhead would be required.

About the only workable idea I have now is to create a Patreon account and ask for donations in return for stopping the video ads. It wouldn't really be a fair system because I can't offer anything beyond stopping the video ads in return for donations. Also, those who pay would be footing the bill for those who don't. But this wouldn't requite any development.

Would it be possible to charge a monthly fee for those who want to use the site without ads? I'm guessing many would pay if it's reasonable, and the rest who don't mind the ads would remain free.

I guess that would require a login/name tied to each post though...

If there were a way to remain anonymous in posting (no user names) I would gladly pay a few bucks a month to avoid the ads

+2

I'm finding them unbearable. Same add which appears to be a woman humping a dog, which is in turn humping a man, appear with each new page.

The variety of ads should change. Since this just started we have some bugs to work out.

I agree. Very annoying. Too many and too often.

Thanks for explaining the work involved to take payments. But... it may be worth it (of course this is making a big assumption you have the time for it). Based on your guesses on how many users would pay, how much would you need to charge a month or year for ad-free?

Who knows, you may come out quite ahead by doing so.. depends on how many are willing to pay and your costs.

Also getting this too ^^^

I don't even know what it's "advertising" though...so does count as an advertisement? More like Tik Tok infiltration.

I don't see any ads just weird videos.

Anonymous wrote:It's a change and it's annoying to have it in the middle of a section of posts, but if that is what it takes to keep the site up so be it. We know you don't run this as a charity.

I count ads as follows:
1 on the top
1 on the left side
2 on the right side
1 in between posts
1 in the lower right corner (video)
2 at the bottom

So that's 8 ads per page in total. There's some point between 1 and 1 million where users will turn away due to excessive ads, but I don't know what that number really is as it's not my area of expertise. On the plus side, there are no pop up ads -- those really turn me away quickly.

Same, though I count the ones that pop into the lower right hand corner when you scroll as a pop up because I have to click the x to get it to go away, and it does cover text.

+1. I’m just getting the same horse, sloth, and conga line. What are these ads for?

Yeah, as I said, we just started this. The vender knew we were going live today and said they would be prepared. But, I don't think they are actually sending us any ads. We are just getting video preroll. The vender is associated with Disney so my guess is a lot of this video is coming from Disney, though I haven't recognized anything yet. Normally ad campaigns need to be turned on for an account I don't think they have turned on any for us yet. With the weekend and holiday, it may be a slow process is getting everything optimized.
