He was born in Mexico but has been a US citizen for several years now.
He is also interested in VCU for sure.

Let me guess the city: Baltimore.

I wish. When you have a chance, look up organized crime towns in Mexico. You’ll get the idea.

Anonymous wrote:Thanks everyone for the input. Student is catholic. His award from College Board was based on PSAT and not SAT ( this is usually how it goes for National Merit ) should have probably mentioned that his top choice is VT.
He’s aware of the competitiveness nature of the top schools in VA which is why he wanted some feedback from strangers on how he looks on paper.

Does he go to public or private school?

Public

I'm saying yes to VT, JMU, UofSC, Alabama, Clemson (maybe waitlisted first), and Fordham.

He does but not significant.

Why would his religion matter?

Because I think Fordham will love this kid. You most certainly don't have to be Catholic to go there, but if he had any church involvement, that could flesh out his application and make him an extra appealing applicant.

I agree. Does he have any volunteering/church involvement?

Will do!!! Thank you 😊

Yes to writing about his story. Actually is a very strong essay. Considering Public Health or Biology for major.
Fordham provides full tuition to awardees of NHRP which is why it’s on his list.

Got it. I think he's going to do really well. Good luck ... will you let us know how this turns out?

Thank you for the suggestion. I will have him look this. Any suggestions?

Yes! St. Joe's, Scranton, Loyola. All offer good merit aid.

Anonymous wrote:Look, the bottom line is that even before the Supreme Court decisions Hispanics in general were not being given the same bump in admissions as African Americans. The bump was much smaller. If OP’s son will be a first generation college student and his first language is Spanish his “story” might be more compelling, but even there UVA and William & Mary are not rolling out the red carpet for any application with 3.5 GPA, especially without strong test scores, unless you’re a recruited athlete.

Maybe in Va but some schools take great pride in enrolling large numbers of Latinos and first generation students …

Oh sweetie, you are going to be very disapppointed.

Just seeing this now. Yes, this will help with admissions.

That and the Hispanic recognition award will be more than enough to “tip” the admissions committee about his background. I expect he will be admitted to a number of these schools.

DP. Would you mind giving some examples of the types of liberal arts schools you’re referring to?

What are you talking about?

There's no city in Mexico tbat spends as much as Baltimore in scbools yet gets so dismal academic results and crazy murder rates.

This could be many, many, many, many applicants.

Baloney. The overwhelming majority of kids applying to college will not have had anything remotely resembling this experience. That’s why it makes the news.

only when combined with stellar academics, which is not the case here

This kid may not have “stellar” academics, but he’s doing well. You sound oddly angry about the kid.

I attended one of these schools. Loved my time there. OP’s son would be a fish out of water socially. There is zero diversity in any of these schools. The student bodies skews heavily upper middle class and overwhelming white. I would not recommend them at all for OP’s son.

UVA is the top tennis program in the country, most players are foreign and have played pro tournaments.

Fordham has an amazing business school, more known for that then STEM, if he has interest in business he would probably then go and be successful in NYC.

My Hispanic son attends one of those schools now. He feels very comfortable there. All of these schools have programs for first generation/minority students. The OP’s son should visit these schools. Mine went for a shadow day at his top choices.
