Chance Hispanic Student

The bump was much smaller. If OP’s son will be a first generation college student and his first language is Spanish his “story” might be more compelling, but even there UVA and William & Mary are not rolling out the red carpet for any application with 3.5 GPA, especially without strong test scores, unless you’re a recruited athlete.
Source? I recall following a Reddit thread where the verified school admin literally had to refute every baseless “fact” some well intended “college admissions sage” tried to post. The clueless bloke continued to post until the School admin replied I share the data, that is news to me.

Can you share the link? I’d love to read that.

Thanks everyone for the input. Student is catholic. His award from College Board was based on PSAT and not SAT ( this is usually how it goes for National Merit ) should have probably mentioned that his top choice is VT.
He’s aware of the competitiveness nature of the top schools in VA which is why he wanted some feedback from strangers on how he looks on paper.

I'm saying yes to VT, JMU, UofSC, Alabama, Clemson (maybe waitlisted first), and Fordham.

Yes to writing about his story. Actually is a very strong essay. Considering Public Health or Biology for major.
Fordham provides full tuition to awardees of NHRP which is why it’s on his list.

Why would his religion matter?

Because I think Fordham will love this kid. You most certainly don't have to be Catholic to go there, but if he had any church involvement, that could flesh out his application and make him an extra appealing applicant.

I agree. Does he have any volunteering/church involvement?

a very dangerous city. Has dual citizenship.

He was born in Mexico but has been a US citizen for several years now.
He is also interested in VCU for sure.

This could be many, many, many, many applicants.

His GPA is not as strong as everything else, which is unfortunate.

Why apply to Fordham? It's expensive.

Baloney. The overwhelming majority of kids applying to college will not have had anything remotely resembling this experience. That’s why it makes the news.

Got it. I think he's going to do really well. Good luck ... will you let us know how this turns out?

He should also apply to other Catholic schools. They would give him great merit aid and could bring the price down to an in-state university price.
