Because you can't define what a "demon" is, see one, or measure one.

We can't see God, but many people still believe. If you believe there is a god, why couldn't you believe that there is a demon? If you can believe that the Holy Spirit can reside in a person, why couldn't a demon?

Why can we accept a benevolent god being in us but not an evil being?

An angel is a positive influence or energy. A demon is a negative influence or energy. you can believe in these or just believe in positive and negative energies. It's the same thing.

What is fear if not a negative energy. It is palpable, it can be felt, sensed by animals, etc.

that's fine that you don't think it's real, but I presume OP believes in God, and is asking if demon possession is real. My point is that if God is real (to OP) why couldn't a demon? And if OP believes that the Holy spirit can reside in us, why can't a demon? This question is not to people like you, who don't believe in either.

It can! Anything can exist if there is no standard of evidence. Now, what are you going to do with that information? Choose to believe in an invisible God who loves you and wants you to be happy and has the power to inspire you, or choose to believe invisible devil, who hates you and wants you to suffer, and has the power torture you? Or choose to believe in a flying spaghetti monster?
