That’s why performance bands should exist on a sliding scale. For example with email response time Over 24 hours: Fireable Under 24 hours but over 8 hour: adequate, keep job but no bonus Under 8 hour but over 1 hour: pay bonus Under 1 hour: higher pay bonus |
I’m with ya OP. I don’t understand it either. I just took over a new team and have some people that are legitimately surprised that I expect them to work every day. They take off all the time on short notice, barely do any work, and the little work they do is very poor quality. Even other teams have noticed and complained about it. They legit want something (a paycheck) for nothing. And apparently their old boss allowed this nonsense by doing their work himself to avoid the more difficult path of firing these lazy bastards and replacing them with productive workers. |

I'm a lawyer. I take my time answering a question. I do research. Even when I think I know, I look up the statute. Sometimes my research will lead me in one direction but I'll see something that might be an exception or an exception to the exception. Sometimes I can't find a case with the exact same facts so I'll look at several cases with similar facts. I respond in a couple of days, even a week or more, with a polished and well researched response that lays out several options and contingencies. My supervisor very happy with this and understands I am working hard. They know they can call me for an update at any point and I'll explain my evolving position. I have a coworker who rushes to answer right away. Then as she's researching she will find the exception to the rule and 45 minutes later she'll send an email saying 'actually, now I think this... " and gets into a back and forth with the supervisor. She will do things like send screenshots of things she looked at that turned out not to be relevant. We're remote and I guess this is to prove she was working on the question even though our supervisor doesn’t micromanage. A few days later she will determine the case is the exception to the exception applies and send an email saying "I'd like to amend my response, now I see that my original answer was correct." I see these email chains and I just cringe. This isn't working smart at all. |

OP here. So, the answer seems to be that people look on Instagram and TikTok and see a few people out of 8 billion worldwide and conclude that everyone is Kim Kardashian or an affiliate marketer making gazillions while on the beach. Thus, they don’t want to work, but expect to be paid. Is that right?
The ridiculous thing about that is that Kim K. and the affiliate dudes are independent business people; they’re not employees. They’re also not the Man of inequality. It’s like people watch social media, conclude that everyone isn’t working but having fun, so they should too. Meanwhile, they forget that it’s social media. Are the claims true? How many of these people exist? Is everything in their life perfect or just the video? |
Oh, so you had an agenda and a ready to respond rant queued up. None of that was in the replies to this thread. |
Ha! No, this answer was the furthest from my mind. Contrary to your post, social media, internet transparency, and perceptions of inequality are all mentioned upthread. |
No one mentioned the Kardarsians — the examples were “normal” well to do people and all the advantages they have. |
I just searched entire thread. No one mentions TikTok or social media either. Calling you out on your agenda. |
Some engineers working for DoT have surveillance software on their gov't laptops, logging all kinds of productivity metrics. Of this I am 100% certain. Are engineers "professional" in your estimation, Hunny Bunny? This small cohort, DoT engineers, cannot be the only one in America subjected to productivity surveillance. I'm also familiar with a telehealth NP -- employed for a VERY large company you all know -- who is watched by the corporation. Is her 6 years of higher ed "professional" enough for you, Cupcake? |
The gubnit WFH nut attorney just showed up. |
