That’s why performance bands should exist on a sliding scale. For example with email response time Over 24 hours: Fireable Under 24 hours but over 8 hour: adequate, keep job but no bonus Under 8 hour but over 1 hour: pay bonus Under 1 hour: higher pay bonus
I'm a lawyer. I take my time answering a question. I do research. Even when I think I know, I look up the statute. Sometimes my research will lead me in one direction but I'll see something that might be an exception or an exception to the exception. Sometimes I can't find a case with the exact same facts so I'll look at several cases with similar facts. I respond in a couple of days, even a week or more, with a polished and well researched response that lays out several options and contingencies. My supervisor very happy with this and understands I am working hard. They know they can call me for an update at any point and I'll explain my evolving position. I have a coworker who rushes to answer right away. Then as she's researching she will find the exception to the rule and 45 minutes later she'll send an email saying 'actually, now I think this... " and gets into a back and forth with the supervisor. She will do things like send screenshots of things she looked at that turned out not to be relevant. We're remote and I guess this is to prove she was working on the question even though our supervisor doesn’t micromanage. A few days later she will determine the case is the exception to the exception applies and send an email saying "I'd like to amend my response, now I see that my original answer was correct." I see these email chains and I just cringe. This isn't working smart at all.
