Michigan vs. Wisconsin

Wisconsin is also less diverse racially and geographically. It has virtually no African American students.

I went to Wisconsin over Michigan and would do it again.

I mean, that’s great. But since you didn’t go to both you have no basis for comparison.

DP, but if we're going to restrict this thread those who attended both schools, it would be a pretty small universe.

"Nobody who gets into both chooses ..." is such a bullying argument.

People choose schools other than Michigan, when they get into both. Sometimes Michigan State.

That said, Wisconsin seems to have more international students, which is interesting.

There are also way more Jews at Michigan than wisco

This was me. I got a lot more merit aid at MSU so I went there.

Madison is much better than Ann Arbor? How so?

Guessing that many people who get into Wisconsin in-state go to Wisconsin over Michigan to save a boatload of money and go to a school that in reality is every bit as good as Michigan (and probably better in certain graduate programs).

There isn’t a huge difference in towns/campuses. There is a difference in prestige however. Michigan easily wins in that regard.

They're both T10 public universities. How is Michigan significantly superior in prestige and why does that matter?

DP. I have family at both. Michigan is a much higher ranked school in almost all disciplines and is known internationally. Not so with Wisconsin. Wisconsin is nothing to sneeze at obviously but they are not in the same tier. One has an admit rate of 20% and the other 60%

Madison is a state capital, larger and has more to offer than Ann Arbor but not sure that would matter for a student. But if that's a priority, then they should focus on Winsconsin.

And "How is Michigan significantly superior in prestige and why does that matter?" is a great question for google. Not going to regurgitate common knowledge here.

If we wanted to ask Google we would post here. Do you have insight?

Wasn't trying to be rude, but I did answer with what I can recall, top of mind. There may be other points about why Michigan is superior depending on which area of study your kid is interested in. In general though, ranking = prestige; prestige = better employer mindspace = better student outcomes. If you don't mind sharing what your kid is interested in studying, you'd get far more pointed responses that may help you decide.

I mean, if you live by a ranking=prestige equation, there’s nothing else to say, really. Many people do.

This is a good point. Wisconsin should be compared to Michigan State.

Not a good point. Wisconsin is the sole large public university in the state. Michigan has two.

Dumb and wrong.
