Is there a noticeable difference in academics or student life? |
I have a DS at Wisconsin. Michigan is obviously higher ranked but I think the student experience is very similar from what I hear from DS's friends.

There is a huge difference in the towns/campuses... WI is far superior in my opinion. |
Madison is much better than Ann Arbor? How so? |
Huge difference in what ways? |
There isn’t a huge difference in towns/campuses. There is a difference in prestige however. Michigan easily wins in that regard. |
35-7. Go Blue! |
They're both T10 public universities. How is Michigan significantly superior in prestige and why does that matter? |
Have you been to both? |
Neither. Thus, the question. I n my ignorance, from reading, I thought they were 2 nice areas to attend college. |
why are pps being so weirdly vague about this? |
NP, who has been to both: far superior is an overstatement. There are many similarities between the two; some differences, sure, but "huge"? No. |
Niece with Wisconsin Engineering degree getting PhD at MIT. It worked for her. |
Michigan is a reach for everyone. They are very similar and many kids who want Michigan choose Wisconsin as their back up/target (it’s not a safety for anyone OOS)
|
DP. I have family at both. Michigan is a much higher ranked school in almost all disciplines and is known internationally. Not so with Wisconsin. Wisconsin is nothing to sneeze at obviously but they are not in the same tier. One has an admit rate of 20% and the other 60% Madison is a state capital, larger and has more to offer than Ann Arbor but not sure that would matter for a student. But if that's a priority, then they should focus on Winsconsin. And "How is Michigan significantly superior in prestige and why does that matter?" is a great question for google. Not going to regurgitate common knowledge here. |
