What age do boys make friends?

Each kid is different. My kids were in daycare starting at 9 months old. They were friendly with other kids in preschool, we would set up play dates but it was mostly side by side play. We noticed a big leap in 2nd grade where kids would actively ask for play date, would have their own hobby and interests, and will engage with strangers easily.
