Warren Buffett’s wife complained about a $4 coffee

I think that’s just a folk legend to make him appealing. Buffett resides in a multi-million dollar mansion and it’s not in Nebraska. Maybe he never sold his original home.

They are notoriously and unapologetically thrifty (cheap). Warren eats the same thing for breakfast everyday, a bacon and egg McMuffin from McDonalds and he only adds cheese if his investments did well overnight in the Asian market. I’m not making this up. I watched a documentary on him in which he participated and they followed him in his old car as he went through the drive through explaining all this. They also live in the same house since forever.

So I’m sure she would have complained over a $4 coffee.

You realize that sound like something other than “thrifty”.

I agree, which is why I also wrote cheap.

The documentary also went into depth about his relationship with his late mother who was abusive. I think a lot of his quirks re money come from that. Anyway he seems super cranky. I worked with him when I was with an Omaha firm and while he was pleasant he had some odd mannerisms. But whatever.

Drip coffee is not a high-labor good. I get $1/cup coffee regularly. And €1/cup coffee in Paris.

She’s right that they’re price gouging her on-site.

A $1 cup of coffee is a loss leader.

Rich people are rich not because they are spenders.

Right on! She should complain and I will join her. It’s a total rip off no matter how much money you have.

I wonder if the summer camp got rich people is actually free to go and stay and they just pay fir occasional meals and are expected to leave a large staff gratituity

I still don’t understand how it’s a rip off. Wouldn’t we have to see the operating budget to know?

I can’t believe anyone finds this billionaire being upset about a cup of coffee costing $4 admirable in any way. It’s ridiculous and offensive. The article said that she said she could buy a pound of coffee for $4 somewhere (not sure where unless she’s buying wholesale) - but if she thinks she can do that, she should, bring a coffee maker and cup and brew it herself. This is not the same thing as spending your money wisely. It’s stupid.

For me it’s also that if you don’t have anything nice to say to the hotel staff in the morning, just don’t say anything. Whether you are at a billionaire conference or not. It’s not as if the staff there set the price of the coffee. And they’re obligated to smile and patronize you for the sake of their jobs. So just be nice and tip well if you have a bajillion dollars.

What a poor person on reddit believes.

Mrs. Buffett is old. Old people regardless of income always complain about the cost of things increasing. Even I have my own complaints despite being in my early 40s.

I always got the vibe that he and Gates are high functioning on-the-spectrum.
