What's the ultimate summer meal?

Tomato salad, burgers and watermelon. Family sized bag of salt and vinegar chips, which I only buy for the pool.

Cold soup to start -- gazpacho, or vichyssoise, or I make one out of fresh squeezed carrot juice and avocado and ginger that is amazing.

Barbecued chicken.

Grilled veggies.

Potato salad.

Homemade ice cream, made in one of those little machines that you put the rock salt in. With freshly picked berries if you can get them at the farmer's market.

Not all at once because the peak seasons don’t overlap, but summer is not complete without:
Soft shell crab
Caprese salad
BLT/similar sandwich
Corn on the cob (simple and elote-fied)
Stone fruits and melons
Squash, zucchini, eggplant especially grilled
Flounder

We live in NYC, so there are also some specific treats we look forward to each summer. My favorites are picking up a khachapuri and eating it on Brighton Beach (with a stop by Tashkent Supermarket on the way home — if you know you know) and coco helado.

We're on the verge of July and I don't want to get to September and think, "Whoops, I forgot to make/eat X!"

What makes you think "It's really summer now"?

So I took that as asking about summer traditional foods and I listed mine. For me it wouldn’t be summer without watermelon for breakfast. It’s just a list of ideas, nothing serious about it.

+1. As an aside, I hate it when people dump on fun threads, especially in the Food forum.

Yeah, for me I was thinking hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill and watermelon and corn.

I’ll tell you, if I’m left unattended, my favorite summer MEAL is boiled potatoes with cucumber salad on top (sour cream, mayo, a little vinegar, a little sugar, dill). That meal is all I need to be back at my grandparents’ farmhouse table, feeling cool despite it being 90 degrees inside.

I made this for friends and it will become summer staple.

Ok. You took that way too personally.

I'm the OP, and I support these statements. The wrist-slapping poster probably had good intentions, and I do love it when people manage to pack multiple summer dishes into one meal (cold soup followed by a BLT or lobster roll? yes please), but sometimes an enormous platter of insalata caprese *is* the meal.

Anyway, carry on! You're doing great (although not to food-shame, but I am curious about how stuffed cabbage says "summertime!" to anyone -- enjoy, though)
