I don't think so. PPs stories are typical "18 and you are out" stories of american families. immigrant families, whether you agree with their approach or not, usually stay together as long as they can to survive. Ask me how i know it.

I was an immigrant at on the street at 19 after being an Au Pair. I know loads of other immigrants in the same position weather they came here as lifeguards of students. The ones with families might not be kicked out but the ones without, get kicked out all the time.
Most I know ended up in restaurants and moved on to better ones. Many went to school once they had enough saved up and could choose their shift times.
