Just pay for peace of mind for you and your children.

You’ve got to be kidding. I would not be okay with this - the only time I fly is for work and it is a BREAK from children. I always pay OOP for a select seat so I can board first to get my suitcase on and get out of airport fast.

For Delta, no. Your kid, even the 3 year old, may end up sitting next to strangers.

That happened to me and my child on a flight 2 years ago. I happily paid for my kid to sit next to me (always do, even with him being a teen now). But two parents didn’t so their toddler girl (maybe 2-3 yrs old) was put in the 3rd seat next to us. It was fine bc I’m a mom and kind of looked out for the toddler, but what if instead she ended up next to a dirty perv or some other undesirable element of society?

Don’t take chances with your children OP. I’ve sat next to some true weirdos on flights. If it’s a 3-seater, I always put my kid by the window and I sit in the middle, to protect him from flight weirdos.

"American's customer service plan now says it guarantees children 14 and under will be seated with at least one accompanying adult so long as the family is booked on the same reservation and there are adjacent seats available in the same fare class the tickets were originally booked in "

I tend to agree. I wouldn’t pay that much for a 2 hour flight. Longer yes.

Parents with kids 6 and under allowed to board early, regardless of seat purchase.
The problem was a parent who arrived almost at door closing and then wanted a seat with toddler. The flight attendants hustled/begged for someone next to an empty seat to move, and eventually someone did.

SW is a known free for all, so it wasn’t the airline’s fault here.

That's on that parent. If they had been present at Family Boarding time there would have been no issue. And there are no "seat purchases" on Southwest, only early boarding purchases.

American has plenty of free seats. I’m guessing these are basic economy tickets which is why it would cost to pre-select a seat? You are getting a discounted ticket for not having an assigned seat.

When I booked this summer, United opened up the seats so I could put us with our children. They didn't do that last summer, if I remember correctly. I'd try booking it through to the point of seat selection and see if they open up seats, or just call them.
