I agree, but I think it’s more doable if the kid is from Massachusetts. There would be family support at a closer distance, more opportunities to network to find housing, and probably more familiarity with the city.

And in-state tuition, of course.

I don’t think there are any safeties *in* Boston that would be a good experience for an OOS student.

Seems like UMass Boston is missing an opportunity. Build some dorms and recruit OOS kids who want to be in Boston but don’t want to pay 85k to be at BU or NE (assuming they can get in).

Massachusetts will never invest in UMB the way they should. Amherst sucks up all the resources to the detriment of Lowell, Boston, and Dartmouth

I mean maybe. But lower income people in Boston do need an option for university. UMB is an institution focused on access more than prestige chasing

OP back. Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen DCUM so overwhelmingly negative about a school! I’m checking it out because it is urban and has an Honors College. Hoping to find a place with some merit or lower tuition than the usual suspects like Northeastern. Thanks to all!

I'm in Boston and we don't hire Suffolk grads.

Why?

Should clarify, we don't hire Suffolk grads for our internships/junior level roles - the ones we have hired in the past haven't had the chops to keep up with our other junior level employees. It's not like it's a written rule, nor are we that snobby (our best associate this year came from St Mike's), it just hasn't worked out in the 10+ years I have been at this company and at this point, we tend to pass on bringing them in for interviews since there never seems to be a wow factor on their resume that wants us to learn more. I don't have much dealings in the day to day of the junior level associates but sit in on the hiring process as one of the senior voices. Not willing to share my industry as Boston is a small world, but you can believe me or not, no skin off my back.

OP here. Thank you so much for sharing your experience.

MA doesn’t invest in any of its state Us enough—all have pretty high tuition

Yes. Plus, it’s already well-known that OOS kids have a better chance of getting into UMASS Amherst than in-state kids. At least leave some of the city fun to the in-staters!

I think UMass Boston just built a new campus with dorms.
A family friend went to Suffolk about 5 years ago. She had a great study abroad experience in Spain but a horrible experience on "campus" with very little support from anyone at the school when her roommate attempted suicide multiple times. Friend found her several times almost dead. It was traumatic and the school was not helpful at all. Also, the academics are... subpar.

Well, Whitey Bulger's brother was the czar of all the UMASS schools for a number of years and actually turned UMASS Boston into what it is today, which is much more than a commuter school. Dartmouth now has a law school, which is something since MA was one of the only states without a state funded law school well into the 2000s. Lowell is a top engineering school, pumping out engineering degrees for those who couldn't access Amherst. He didn't do too badly, really.
