Suffolk University, Boston

Look into:

Emerson
UMass Boston
Emmanuel
Bentley
Simmons
Wesley

Emerson’s acceptance rate is around 40% and will probably drop due to the two Dans and their awards. I’d call it a target maybe, not a safety.

Emerson is geared toward performing arts and broadcasting, so if your child is not interested in the majors the6 offer, it would not be the best choice.

Wentworth is perhaps worth looking at

+100. Assumption College too.

UMass Boston is a hard no, although they have a few dorms, it is truly a commuter school.

I would not spend a dime to send my kid to Suffolk.

Look into Endicott in Beverly as a safety. Salem State is great for nursing and education.

This is a link to a recent article that looks at enrollment trends at small colleges in Massachusetts. It seems to say a lot about their financial health and future prospects:

We couldn't find a true safety in Boston that DC was willing to attend (and that we were willing to pay for - we weren't willing to pay for Suffolk). Instead, if New England is the goal, look at U Conn, U of NH, U Mass Amherst, and Johnson and Whales

I know someone who went to law school there. He had choices but they were very good tuition wise. He is doing fine. He was at a T20 undergrad

The law school has a decent reputation if you want to practice in Boston but is pretty much worthless outside of NE.

Depends on your definition of a safety. A op mentioned Emerson, for example. But the acceptance rate is around 40% give or take (slightly higher for fall 2022, as low as 33% in fall 2020) and it costs north if $70k/year all in. I don’t consider that a true safety (my kid’s safety schools were 70% or better acceptance rate and affordable without aid) but YMMV. It’s an amazing school for a kid with the right interests, though!

Emerson engages heavily in tuition discounting; 70% percent of kids get merit aid & average merit scholarship is $20k/year

And I remember that every time I lay the tuition bill. But even with more than the average in merit, when you throw in books, travel, basic necessities, etc. it’s still well above in-state tuition. Plus, as you said, almost 1/3 of kids don’t even get that and of those who do many get below that average. For most, cost is absolutely a factor. That’s true at any school in Boston. The cost of housing alone can be crushing.

Would you please explain why? Thanks, OP

They live in the Boston area.

OP back. Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen DCUM so overwhelmingly negative about a school! I’m checking it out because it is urban and has an Honors College. Hoping to find a place with some merit or lower tuition than the usual suspects like Northeastern. Thanks to all!

Because they built a student dorm next to a building that houses many sex offenders, including 14 Level 3 sex offenders.

I am sure he does well for himself, then.

I'm in Boston and we don't hire Suffolk grads.
