Kids are expensive. Why not just make everything free? Why stop at college?

College is expensive. When nobody’s having kids anymore because it’s too expensive to raise them you’ll be shaking your head wondering why.

Parents are supposed to pay for college. The entire financial aid system is based on this idea. It has been this way for a loooong time.

Yes, most of them are low income and so free anyways.
No worries

This is not true. In many states instate college tuition used to be free—coincidentally, until broader swathes of the population started being allowed to attend.

The max grant is only $7500/year and that’s for the very poor, i.e. HHI under $40k

Provide a reference / link. How many years ago was state college free? Hard to believe this was recent.

LOL 99% of low income kids aren’t getting into meets full need schools like Harvard or Dartmouth. They’re working while attending community college with loans. You really need to get out more.

Yes, and birthrates are plummeting because childrearing, including saving for college, is too expensive.

Kids should just choose better parents then.

The college system in the U.S. not meritocratic as long as someone can have to turn down an offer of admission at an institution because they can’t afford to pay.

Anything other than a discounted public college is a luxury good.

The world has changed. Most U.S. jobs aren’t coal mining or putting stuff on an assembly line anymore; they require a college education.

Sure however if you don’t want to pay for your kid to go to an expensive private college, good luck finding someone else to.
