Waitlisted at UVA and W&M

You can’t take a gap semester with spring pathways. You have to earn a certain number of credits next fall— either at NOVA with a 3.0 (??) GPA or WMs overseas partner, with other spring admit choices. Doing something besides CC or approved overseas makes you a transmit admit (if you don’t go to the cc to earn credit) or a new admit (if you work instead of earning credit)

The thought is spring admits will fill in spring study abroad and freshman transfer away residential spots and come open the the credits for graduate in 7 semester (on time with the fall admits). Honestly, it’s an awful time to expand the class because they are taking downs offline to update and housing is a mess.

That said, interesting option. My kid is an introvert went in as a fall admit this year, and we very integrated by January. She would not have done spring admit. I think it works best if your kid is a social go getter and not an introvert who will hide out in their room, possibly with an upperclass roommate.

I think the study abroad option can work really well for introverts--they form a bond with a smaller group of people studying abroad, meet with other spring admits in a less crazy atmosphere than freshman orientation and have an identified group of people they are connected to through that, and then also meet new people in their dorm. Much less overwhelming than that freshman fall when everyone is going so hard to find their social place in large groups.

My DC was turned off by it because when you tour the school, almost every person who is asked about their favorite memories or traditions at W&M named things that happen in Fall of freshman year. It was really off-putting. Ultimately got off the WL, but chose to go elsewhere.

May I ask when your child got off the waitlist? Month? Year? The waitlist has sooooo many kids on it.

I have two colleagues with kids who did the spring admit this year at W&M. My DD was an ED admit and started in the fall; the other two girls spent the fall in London and had a lot more fun! They met several other spring admit kids so they had friends going into this semester.

It's a bit of an adjustment in the spring for sure but they are also coming in at a time when the initial fall freshman friend groups are getting a little stale and kids are looking to branch out from their dorm friends (or at least my kid is!) and are excited to meet new people. I think it's a great program. Much better than leaving kids on the WL for months in limbo!

I'm the PP who posted this. DD has a friend who is a spring admit and I asked her about housing. She said there is a floor in one of the dorms that is all transfer students. Some are upperclassmen, but most are spring admits. Her friend was placed with another spring admit kid. The PP who said spring admits are placed with fall admit freshman was not correct, though I suppose that could happen if a fall kid doesn't return in the spring. But most will get a spring admit roommate.

Hope that helps someone! If W&M is the top choice, I think it's a great option. Would definitely choose a semester abroad over a year at UVA Wise, which is like in the middle of nowhere, right?

Mary Washington still is accepting applications after March 1, if she wants a similar to W&M environment

Thank you, I stand corrected

Just thought this was a possibility as it happened to a kid on the same floor as ours. No roommate in fall and suddenly one in Spring.
Happy to hear they cluster the spring admits together.

All the best wishes to those who decide to go that route!

My younger kid's college years were disrupted by covid. Many of his friends are just graduating after five years. Taking an extra semester to start is a minor thing in the long run. The semester abroad sounds like an interesting option.

No.

The waitlist numbers can be found in the Common Data Set. However, should you accept the Waitlist and do the pathways for spring admission, your kis will show under the 'D: Transfer Admission' section and not in the 'B: First-Time First-Year Admission' section of the Common Data.

Now the difference between a normal fall transfer and the WL spring transfer is that those spring kids are guaranteed spring admission if they meet the course & gpa requirements. While fall transfer will additionally depend on space available. I trust they have a pretty good idea of the number of kids taking the spring pathway route and the level of success which lead to a certain number of WL spring admission kids. Just like they know to estimate the numbers needed to fill all fall seats.

To those who were waitlisted, where did your kids end up going?

If you apply ED, are the only options acceptance or rejection? Or can you be waitlisted and/or deferred to spring (i.e., spring pathway)?

if you apply ED to UVA, you can be rejected, deferred to regular decision or accepted. If you are deferred, you could still be waitlisted when RD comes out.
