There hasn’t been any.

My kids are past the elementary stage, so I have a longer view on the demographics. They are changing. Original owners (primarily in Tanterra and the sliver of Olney mill that feeds into the school) who hung onto houses for a long time kept classroom size very low for many years. Then as houses started to sell, the school numbers started to tick up. Another poster spoke of class size being too big. My older kids had 20 or less in their classrooms for many years. Since anyone can follow the year at a glance stats, you can see the demographic shift.

People who have lived in Olney/Brookeville for decades/generations are talking about the shift. Crime is up.

Crime is up? In Olney ? Stop it.

Very much so, unfortunately. The shoplifting at grocery stores has been a huge issue. Cars have been stolen, cars are constantly broken into, there’s been multiple videos from Neighbors on Ring of incidents.

I was in the Olney TJ Maxx yesterday and a woman called the cops as there was a fight going on in the back of the store. Something similar happened when I was at Harris Teeter a few months ago. Definitely feels like more stuff is going on now versus when I moved here a decade ago.

Crime is up because it's coming in from DC. The car thefts and break ins are from a DC theft ring. The other crime you have been seeing on neighbor's ring cameras are from the same demographic of people who have lived here for decades, they have been white teenage boys.

While I cannot comment on the amount of crime in Olney, what has gone up is the number of people with Ring cameras to capture it. Not to mention social media like Facebook and Nextdoor to report it. There is definitely a lot more sharing and awareness.

In terms of changing demographics, glad my 2 brown Latino children are helping Greenwood by keeping the overall testing scores up with each of them scoring in the 99 or 97 percentile on the Map tests. God knows the white trash kids who go there won’t amount to anything.

Awesome. My kids are’t white, but your comments are disgusting.

Glad your 2 Latino kids are doing so well at Greenwood. Maybe let MCPS know that they no longer need to worry about the Achievement Gap since you have it all figured out.

That last sentence was really gross. We are also Latino at Greenwood and your attitude needs a check.

Well, unfortunately there were gun shots reported this afternoon right by Brooke Grove. Not sure if the uptick in crime is coming from DC or not. But either way, crime is definitely up in Olney.

So glad my DS graduated today and will hopefully have a better middle school experience. Greenwood refused to help him with his reading issues when I asked for support over the last 2 years. I am going to get a private evaluation to try and help get him support in the future.

You’re not the first person I know who complains about special ed support at the school. I know some people have left to primates because of that.

My kid lucked out: in a small class with only kids who are accelerated for reading and math. Game changer! So much better than what my other kids received (although their experience wasn’t awful).

The new principal is very good (much better than the last two).

While I don’t have kids with any special needs, I suspect public schools aren’t the best equipped to handle them. Private tutors are.

We are looking to move to the area. How do current parents feel about greenwood?

Unfortunately we had to pull our kids out and homeschooling them - really bad experience

Our experience through 2nd grade has been good, including special education for speech and reading. Everyone has been helpful and supportive. I’m an introvert but have found a good community among the parents there, and my daughter’s friends are all nice kids.

I guess its the luck of the draw. We have had some super checked out teachers and the administration hasn't been responsive to concerns

Same, we frequently had to talk to admin about one particular teacher and nothing was done. My DC started to hate to come to school and we ended up pulling for private. Our older child seemed to fare better with teachers. Definitely luck of the draw. I have heard bad things about their special Ed support, but this is just anecdotal.
