Absolutely not true. You are speaking from your own point of view.

All Dems want to let kids read porn in school. They want all schools to teach that our society is systemically racist. They want to get rid of all standardized testing and leave parents totally out of decision making.

I grew up in public schools --through the Masters' Degree level. DH did the same, except for Masters was private.

We sent out kids to public schools and colleges.

I have always wanted my grandchildren to go to public schools, but I am beginning to rethink that.

When people think that 'Gender Queer" a graphic novel with sexual depictions is okay to have in SCHOOL libraries, something is wrong.

I am NOT for book banning. But, discretion in what is ordered for school libraries is just common sense. Book banning is keeping books from being published or sold. It is not keeping them out of school libraries.

It's not porn. Where did you go to school?

Different poster, but I think some of these books are inappropriate and do border on porn. So we disagree there and are both entitled to our opinion. And removing books from school libraries is not banning books. You are welcome to aquire them on your own - they are readily available.

I think Republicans are very worried about the direction public schools are taking. Questionable materials, keeping secrets from parents, and divisive lessons are some of the things they are concerned about. So the choice for them is to try to change those things or completely bail on the public schools - and that may mean trying to get school vouchers.

In FCPS they have little chance of making much headway. They probably make up a significant share of the students who left during COVID-19 and have not returned. They relocated, went private, or homeschool. Perhaps the tax money should follow the students. We know FCPS does not manage money wisely.

There you go. Dismantle government.

FCPS is down about 5% of it's students. Did they cut the budget? Did they even freeze budget increases?

The alternative question, I suppose, is whether the Democrats can find more moderate Democrats to replace those not seeking re-election.

I liked Kyle McDaniel when he was running for Cohen's seat in Springfield. Of course he had no chance as an independent. But now that he's seeking the Democratic endorsement he's tacking far to the left of where he seemed to have been when he ran as an independent in 2019. It's sad there's such a need to pander, but getting an endorsement from someone like Atif Qarni is a negative, not a plus, for some of us.

Sounds dreadful. But then in Fairfax we're spending a boatload of money on building a new Franconia Government Center, while kids in spots all over the county go to school in trailers and crappy modulars. Do McKay and his buddies ever think how this is received among the public?

But I also support public schools. So my question is whether the local Republicans trying to get elected this fall want to gut and privatize public education (won’t support them) or instead reform FCPS and refocus on the basics (will support them).

Anyone with real insight is welcome to post. Screeds against, say, Glenn Youngkin or Randi Weingarten are not being solicited.

This is not hard so I am going to say this one time

REPUBLCIANS = SCHOOL CHOICE = BETSEY DEVOS/YOUNGKIN PRIVATE SCHOOLS= SCAM/GRIFT

IF you want to be like Arkansaw more power to you vote in Republicans

If you want an educated workforce and educated kids run for the hills from Republicans/Moms of Liberty Garbage Nazi's

They promote crap not education.

Time for VA to WAKE the HELL UP.

There is no other path.

Seriously people wake up!

You're the exact type of idiot I hoped (in vain) would refrain from junking up the thread. Can you please go crawl back under your rock and let people who actually might have some insight post? There isn't a thread you touch that you don't degrade.

Get some new material. The Youngkin/DeVos bit is getting old. 😴

They want vouchers, which takes the money out of public schools and into private. This only benefits families that can pay the difference in cost between the voucher amount and the private school tuition. Wealthy kids get private education and the other kids are left behind in their defunded schools.

There are people who want vouchers and then there are people who want better public schools but would just as soon have vouchers than continue to have to put up with what they’re getting from public schools.

I also haven’t noticed any shortage of well-heeled Democrats who turn up their noses at public schools now and send their kids to privates. I suppose the counter-argument to your observation is that they want to make it harder for others to enjoy what they can afford for their own kids.

I want public schools that teach. I want the SB to spend money on instruction.

Vouchers could make the difference for some families. And if they leave that is fewer students for the public schools.

Yeah, I’m pretty skeptical of intentions. The one person I know who is constantly railing on FCPS schools was connections to GOP politics and no longer has kids in county schools (one has graduated and the other is in private) so her constant handwringing and hysteria about FCPS feels like a political gambit.

DP. DeVos is the OG MAGA voucher hack.

And fewer dollars for the many kids left behind who can’t snag/afford a spot in private school.

Always.

No. I’m a republican and I teach. I don’t indoctrinate and push my views on my students either. I just teach the curriculum and provide a warm, loving, nurturing environment for my title one students.

Exactly. The haters on this thread are gonna keep hating. So sad.

This.

Makes little sense. Fairfax isn’t anything close to what you’d consider a soft target if your goal is to “dismantle public education,” given the liberal population and the Democratic stranglehold on local government, unless you think the self-inflicted wounds by an overreaching School Board and county government have left the county particularly vulnerable to Republican insurgents. The most likely scenario is they may pick up a few seats on the School Board and Board of Supervisors this fall, which wouldn’t give them control but might allow for some dissent and/or challenges to the progressive echo chamber. That might not be such a bad thing.
