I am on Twitter and IG very sparingly. I have accounts there to see what's going on.

These are simply tools. You can control them.

Some people control gambling, heroin use, and cigarette smoking.

But too many people easily get addicted. Social media is garbage. Toxic garbage.

Is this site toxic garbage? Does it count as social media?

Isn’t IG still pretty popular? I don’t have one but everyone acts like IG is the only acceptable form of social media. And I don’t get it. What’s so different about IG that would make it superior?

It's dying. Older people have now moved there and young people are off. It is headed towards FBland which is old people and furniture sales.

Do you and your friends post? How old are you all?

I am 45 and only a few people post on FB and they all seem very low-EQ.

No one would ever make the effort to interact with me if I cut out social media. Which obviously says a lot about me, but keeping FB keeps me alive.

Newsflash - DCUM is social media

Perhaps.

But unlike TikTok, Insta, etc., this site does not employ a predatory algorithm driven by AI and designed to lead to dependence (aka addiction).

Think of Facebook as: “Comparison book.”

This is so accurate. 100%

Comparison to whom? Random Boomers? FB has tumbleweeds rolling thru. If you are on there feeling bad about yourself, call a psychiatrist.

Did you even read the thread title? Doesn't apply to you.

I have no prob being off social media -
None. I'm also age 50 though.

I also don't text the way everyone does - excessively, buts and pieces, commenting about things. When I do things with people I interact. I have 2-3 old friends I can call to talk. But that's it - nobody seems to think it's normal to call and talk which saddens me. I hate texting.

The whole texting and social media thing is what's driving society insane. People could've happier refraining and going back to conversations. It's unnatural to type your feelings all the time!

Social media isn't inherently toxic - you are just using it wrong.

People can be toxic. When you interact with toxic people on SM it becomes toxic.

It is totally possible to use SM and be filled with joy, inspiration, learning and support.

But there’s no “expectation” that you reply or engage in anything. It’s like window shopping…take it or leave it, no pressure.
Social media, tied to your own persona (even if “fake”) establishes an expectation that you will post/respond/react/comment.
Here you can post something and never look back if you wish. No one would ever know or care.

+1
I love that about this site and love that I don’t need to worry about something I post ending up blowing up for IRL.

DCUM should not be compared to FB or IG, but I do have to say that there are times when a person posting an honest question on DCUM is met by sarcasm, snark, and "you are an idiot" kinds of responses. When that happens--and it happens a lot--then DCUM is no better than the others.
