This. And not just a wonderful school but a small one, so everyone knows everyone. So my heart goes out to the person who was able to step forward, and help this story come to an end. And I am so sad to think that someone my son probably knew, had to experience this. I hope he gets to keep his anonymity, until or unless he doesn't want to. Not sure how that works but kid, whoever you are, I admire you and I wish you the best. Mom hugs to you.

In cases like this one, there is often more than one victim. It is heartbreaking, and must have taken a lot of courage to come forward.

I think as a parent, this makes me want to know how we can better protect our kids against these kind of predators. This guy must have been pretty "nice" on the surface to gain the kids' trust. I think kids and adults kind of expect for there to be more obvious warning signs.

Kids know which teachers are “creepy” or “weird”. Adults tend to ignore the “rumors” just because they haven’t seen the clear evidence of rape.

He was actually PROVIDING alcohol to the students on the weekends!!!

Successful predators often don’t come across as creepy or weird, at least not until they already have the victim in their clutches. I wouldn’t let my kid near an obviously creepy dude but the point is that we need to teach kids that there are boundaries that are totally inappropriate even if the adult doesn’t seem creepy at all.

I meant to say there are boundaries that should never be crossed even if the adult doesn’t seem creepy at all.

I don’t understand why he wasn’t fired until Jan 20. Why did the school wait so long??

Do you have information that they knew about the abuse before then?

He was fired before or after getting charged?

The school is MEGA implicated if there was a whiff of this amongst administration. They were gilman students at the to
E he was doing this. I don’t know how you can send your sons to gilman after hearing this news.

I agree but I don’t think the admin knew and once they did they fired him. From what I understand the students asked him for rides after they had been drinking because they didn’t want to tell their parents. Admin could not have known until he was turned in by students but the students were intimidated against reporting him. This can happen anywhere. After this I googled and found all sorts of past sex abuse in private and public schools. These people probably seek these jobs to be near the kids and it’s not always obvious when someone is charming but evil.

I remember getting rides to and from school events and clubs from teachers way back in the day. I am so glad none of my teachers were pervs.

It was well known that he was babysitting, housesitting , and driving kids around. It’s a small school community.

Families of raped children typically go to the cops only if the school won’t fire the teacher. They should actually go to the cops FIRST because most schools are all about believing the lying teacher, instead of believing the kids.

If you suspect ANYTHING, you go STRAIGHT to the cops. THEY will investigate. Schools will not.

Lololol. First of all, I 100% think you’re a troll. But on the slim chance you’re not: good luck with that. Let us know how it goes.

Fwiw my neighbor is in admissions at McDonough and said they’ve gotten several emails from gilman families wanting to inquire about a move.

Mcdonogh is only a few years removed from having a parent conduct an affair with an underaged student in the school’s parking lot.

He was GIVING the kids alcohol while driving them around. I don’t believe for a minute that concerned parents said nothing about this to the school about this teacher. Schools usually say we can’t do anything without proof, even though they’re OBLIGATED to make an IMMEDIATE police report of POTENTIAL illegal activity of their teacher.

Funny how the school kept him working with the kids until they FINALLY didn’t have a choice now that the police were charging him with freggin RAPE of a boy!!!! They know they’re are more victims of this evil rapist teacher.

Could happen anywhere

NO. Continued sex abuse of students happens where school administrators refuse to doing anything about it.

PARENT NEWS FLASH:
Police want you to report DIRECTLY to the police department ANY potential inappropriate relations between school staff and students. THEY want to investigate to see IF any laws are broken. They do NOT need ANY proof! You are NOT a trained nor experienced detective. Your job is to simply report whatever you suspect. This is the ONLY way to get predators out of our schools.

These comments are why this is so disturbing.. as part of the community , if I get one more communication or talk to someone that is "saddened" or "devastated" it is making me loose my mind.. how about ENRAGED .. ANGER... UNACCEPTABLE this is a complete establishment failure , we have been at the school only a few years and this is the THIRD news worthy incident.. institutional changes need to be made.
I acknowledge that this crap happens everywhere, literally everywhere. But I also think that schools can become so cultish and insular that reporting it, and sending a beloved member of the staff (and he was beloved and celebrated by many years of middle schoolers) to prison, becomes problematic.
Let's make schools less "cultish" and crap like this will be reported more freely. They only indoctrinate to ensure alumni donations anyway.
agree, and his father is apparently very well regarded with "the board" and people knew things and didn't come forward - I pray everyone involved is held accountable for their action or non-action. Gilman needs to make some swift changes across the board.

Another Gilman parent and I agree. While the abuse was not known, it wasn’t a secret to the administration that Mr, Bendan was engaged in activities such as babysitting and driving kids around that are violations of school policies adopted after the last investigation.

I assume they know this because they are part of the Baltimore circle and also the Gilman community. It is a small world.
