It was going to get out eventually. Do you want to have this conversation now or in a couple months? If your children attend Sidwell, you should be acclimated by now to the fact that certain internal matters will become public and will be discussed and debated. If that bothers you, choose a lower profile school.

Conversation? What is there to converse about? That's the tuition increase; it's not negotiable. Or by conversation do you mean complain?

I’m just bothered by icky parents of whom they’re very few thank goodness.
Why does it need to be debated? What are you going to do? Strike? Other schools cost the same but don’t offer as much.
And actually this is the answer to why SFS? The name alone inspires awe (but also draws out the wormy parents into the sunlight to “share” internal stuff — it’s a privilege you’re getting these comms dunce)

How old are you? Really.

Obviously, a younger, better raised parent

You know OP there’s another thread going on the same topic. OP didn’t copy internal letters and wrote a normal measured post, why don’t you go learn yourself something?

Video of the OP breathlessly rushing to leak the email first!

Sidwell community really distinguishing themselves today.

Sidwell community is just tired of the same 1-2 SFSers leaking internal emails

Then all the comms have to be bland

Then the same 1-2 complain about the comms being bland and admin not being open enough (which they are; I’d send emails under code so every copy paste flags)

Nothing’s ever good enough or ok for them, but guess whose tongues the cat got at every parent meeting? The same 1-2 and then they are back here to stir the pot for cheap thrills.

There’s another thread going and it includes more mature members of the SFS community, I decided to throw a tantrum
and hold up the mirror to this behavior because it’s repetitive and negative and doesn’t represent the community

I immediately imagined the OP scurrying to break the “news” on dcum for a cheap adrenaline boost

A hypothetical class of 20 second graders would include:

14 full pay at $50,000 = $700,000

4 at $25000 (50% FA) = $100000

2 at $0 (100% FA) = $0

That’s $800, 000 of Revenue.

Variable expense might include two teachers at $80,000 or $160,000 total.

That leaves $640,000 for Overhead absorption.

A Hell of a business model, if you ask me.

And people are lined up to pay the $50,000!

Wow. Veritable CPA. What a simplistic understanding. Uf.

This is VERY over-simplified.

That $640,000 also includes:

- Lunch every day of the school year for the 20 students, plus the two teachers
- Salary for specials teachers, librarians, health office, security officers, other staff who support the kids and teachers
- Benefits for the teachers and above
- Field trips, class events and excursions, transportation
- Building and grounds upkeep and maintenance
- Class tech and other supplies

Of course it’s oversimplified.

Lunches? How about 22 kids and teachers x 180 days at $10 ahead. That’s $40k
Benefits? Let’s throw in another $40k.

That leaves $460, 000 for a small share of all the support people, field trips, the buildings and class tech ($26,000 per student?)

Public schools have all theses costs, huge staffs, fleets of school buses, etc. and they spend less than $20,000 per student.

My guess is that the tuition isn’t based on what it costs the school, but rather on what the market will bear.

Trust me, the other thread has a normal OP, intelligent discussion and explains some of the actually applicable economic indices and factors. This one’s shot.

It’s a full 50k more than we paid at a well-regarded k-2.

I have no doubt it does provide the value. I wish it were cheaper but I’ve never laid awake at night wondering if I’m wasting my $$$. I would do at -$10k in most schools that are not NCS, STA, SFS. Maybe GDS

Can you tell me what the value is? Like can you quantify what makes Sidwell worth 10, 20, 30, 40, 50k more than other schools? I would be curious to know.

Name brand. You can go anywhere in the country, and many places around the world, and the name Sidwell is known. Not true for most of these other schools.

Hi My name is Mary. I went to Sidwell. Do you recognize the name? Yes, great. I am your gal for work ahead of everyone else. I proudly paid 50k each year for 5,10, 12 years for this Hi I went to Sidwell moment. Hire me! yay!

NP. The internal stuff will be publicly posted on the website next week. What’s the big deal? Weird.

So, three quarters of a million dollars before you even get to college. It sure will suck to find out the neighbor’s kid went to MCPS for free and is going to the same college as your kid.
