Same - I believe Northeastern used to be a non-competitive commuter school that was able to game the rankings. Since many parents live and die by rankings, they believe that the rank of Northeastern truly defines its quality.

Your beliefs are inaccurate, and the attention to this particular school (and no other) on this board is truly fascinating. There have been five posts in one week, most with wildly inaccurate claims, and little or no moderation.

It seems obvious that some parents can not let go of the fact they and/or their DC were not admitted to NEU. If the school was any of what DCUM claims, there would not be almost 100k applications this year. Suit yourself, but making false claims on DCUM, or trying to disparage any school who refused you admission, only puts you in a very obvious and glaring spotlight. Teach your kids better, coping mechanisms notwithstanding.

You are making it loud and clear why NEU refused to admit you.

NP here with no connection to NU. My child didn't apply. To be fair to other PPs, I think the fact that NU was featured in the Jeff Selingo book is what gives a lot of people the impressions they have about the school. I didn't know much about it at all, except that a friend's kid liked it but didn't go due to the expense. But Selingo does spell out pretty clearly all the steps the school took to try to rise in the rankings. A lot of people are going to have opinions about all of that.

How in the world can you think that if you switch to EDI you are obligated to go to a campus that you did not select?

Are people that obtuse, or more obviously. trying to throw shade at NEU even though they're doing nothing others aren't doing?

If you don't want NU.in, you don't need to go. That simple. Just like Hamilton has their internationals, NYU their spring admits, Tulane their spring admits, etc, etc etc

Almost every school I know has something like this. UVA has UVA Wise.

The pp is correct though. It was a non competitive commuter school.

If OP wants a commuter school, GMU is a fine choice.

I have no skin in this game--my DC looked at NU and decided it was too big--but a huge number of kids from their school applied to NU last year (including several of their close friends) and very few got in...and then everyone talked about how "overrated" it is. There's a LOT of sour grapes about this school.

BU doesn't even have a campus.
It's very competitive too.

Even though the BU campus extends horizontally down Comm Ave, if you visit BU Beach or near Nickerson Field, you'll find a nice campus vibe. Additionally, the view from many school buildings toward the Charles River is impressive.

omg. The way Northeastern lives rent free in so many of your heads. lol.

It was actually called Boston Tech.

But this is 21st century now.

LOL, I have not dog in this fight but this a reach. MIT has been MIT for over 100 years. Northeastern was a 3rd rate commuter school up until like 15 years ago.

LOL, NOPE.
Initially MIT was more like vocational focused
Colleges in the US were regarded 2nd 3rd rate compared to European colleges.

Fascinating how little people actually know first hand about some of these colleges, yet take the liberty to try pontificate about them anyway. NEU has not been a commuter school for about 70 years - that is a long time! NEU has always been a top engineering and CS college.

Extra fascinating how far some posters will go to try to prove their inaccurate point. Fascinating study in psychology issues!

It's well after WWII, 60s even 70s that US colleges start surpassing European colleges.
Colleges in the US were regarded 2nd and 3rd rate, so top students who really study something went to Euro colleges in France, Germany, UK, etc.
NEU haters seem to be stupid.

So, if MIT was third rate by your logic in the 1970s, what does that make NEU during that same timeframe?

DP. I went to college in the Boston area in the late late 90s, it was definitely a commuter school at that time. Definitely 3rd tier behind BC BU even Babson. I get that you love NEU today, but you can’t rewrite history.

We barely start using internet in the 90s. Nobody cares BC BU were better school back then.
It's 21st century already and the age of AI began.
Keep up!

Looks like you really believed MIT was MIT from the beginning, the #1 school in the world leading science and technology.
It was regarded as a vocational school almost until around 1950. It began to rise thanks to WWII and the Cold War when it started receiving federal funding for research. Until then, top students wanted to go to European universities to further their study and research. Most of the US colleges start small like that.

Imagine some Europeans keep saying MIT was a vocational school and 2nd rate 3rd tier school until the 70s. Imagine whenever MIT comes up, HEY, MIT was a vocational school and lower-tier than European universities back then.

Okay, whatever, Doesn't mean anything, and they look stupid.
What's important is today.

What’s stupid is you continuing to say MIT and Northeastern in the same sentence. Yes, MIT benefited from funding. It rose to be what it is from is research and contributions to the science and technology field. Northeastern benefitted from a university president that gamed the system. It’s ‘rise’ has been well documented. https://www.bostonmagazine.com/news/2014/08/26/how-northeastern-gamed-the-college-rankings/
