Why do so many people in cities like DC own cars and then complain about carjackings?

Pp here/- also because of school choice via lottery, very few kids go to school in their neighborhood anymore. Parents need cars to drop off and pick up. My kid will take the bus 40 mins next year to high school. Im very concerned about violence in city buses. Every time Ive ridden one it’s been sketchy as hell, with kids or adults shouting obscenities, mentally ill people going off or uncomfortably staring, etc. the incident where the older woman was beaten up and no one did anything was eye opening. Is that just urban culture? Ps ive lived downtown for 20 years and am not white. Neither was the woman who was pushed.

Who cares if you do or don’t have a car. Car jackings are a sign of societal dysfunction and should not be normalized or thought of as ok.

Should people carrying wallets not be able to complain of robbery and should solution to said robberies be not carrying a wallet?

Doesn’t it bother you that carjackers who aren’t physically disabled and don’t live in the farthest corners of the city aren’t taking public transportation? You should show up to their court dates with WMATA maps to teach them the error of their ways.

Actually, this is a good point and another area where our underfunded public schools are expressing a systemic bias.

I know this isn't what this thread is about but it seems clear to me that the rise in carjackings in the city is directly related to the success of anti-theft technology in cars.

I was on a jury for a carjacking where the perpetrators abandoned a stolen older car in order to commit a carjacking so they could have a newer car, with a key. They couldn't steal that car while unoccupied because of anti-theft devices. They were (stupid, dangerous, criminal) kids.

Similarly to how people don't steal phones any more because it's too hard to use them, it seems that someone needs to come up with car technology to make carjacking useless. It would have to happen in a way that doesn't put the driver at risk, and idk what it is. Maybe face ID where new drivers have to go through some registration process OR push an emergency button that would contact law enforcement would work.

An obvious flaw there would be that if the carjacker needs your face to operate the car, they might kidnap you and force you to drive. But I don't think that's what most of the city's carjackers want to do, they just want a car to joyride around in (again not saying that's not incredibly stupid and criminal, it is).

Car break-ins are increasing in the burbs too, are you going to chastise suburbanites for owning personal vehicles too? Or not being rich enough to afford 3 car garage homes? Here is a solution to crime: stop owning anything If you don't have valuable personal belonging then nobody has anything to steal. What are you going to say next?
