Why do so many cyclists who live in a city like DC who get their bikes stolen whine and complain so much?

Bingo. I think these people don’t realize how ridiculous they sound to everyone who is outside of their social circle. It is good evidence for why people should not let their hobbies or causes, whatever they may be, define their personality.

If the logic is that you don't "need" something so you shouldn't complaint when something bad happens regarding that thing...

You don't need a bike, so you shouldn't complain if it gets stolen
You don't need a SFH, so you shouldn't complain if it gets burglarized
You don't need to fly, so you shouldn't complain when Southwest has a total meltdown
You don't need to eat in restaurants, so you shouldn't complain when they don't honor your reservation, serve you something your allergic to, etc.
You don't need to live in or visit a city, so you shouldn't complain if you get mugged
You don't need to drive on the highway, so you shouldn't complain if somebody hits you.
You don't need to send your kid to private school, so you shouldn't complain about anything that happens regarding that school.
You don't need to order anything at all delivered, so you shouldn't complain when it doesn't arrive.
You don't need to interact with any member of your family, so you shouldn't complain about them.

The list is endless. As long as you are breathing and not starving, stop complaining!
