Why do so many people in cities like DC own cars and then complain about carjackings?

Absent physical disabilities, being immunocompromised or living in the farthest corners of the city, you do not need a car here. I’m actually generally of the “tough on crime” variety, but I don’t care about carjackings since there’s no reason to own a car if you live in the city.

If you are single and don't have pets, and work in the city too, it's easy to get by without a car. My city dwelling sibling hasn't owned one in twenty plus years. But he's not carrying car seats, strollers, boxes of diapers or taking his dog to the vet. He uses trains and buses or walks, he rarely ubers. If he is visiting family outside the city someone has to pick him up from the closest airport or station.

I must be missing something, why post this in the DC politics forum?

this is a ridiculous post. if you don't want to have a car, fine, but you don't get to decide who does or does not need a car.

just because there are piece of crap people who carjack doesn't mean that i should not be able to own a car if i want to, and last i checked, carjacking is a crime. i generally do feel sorry for people who are victims of crime.

Ha! NP. We have one car, street parked. I would like to not be carjacked! Carjackings are a crime carried out in my neighborhood by teenagers for a thrill. How does me not having a car solve the issue of teenagers looking for a thrill (some of them armed)? I assume these teens have a history of trauma and violence in their homes. Again: me not having a car = peace?
