So, do products don't list sugar as added vs. natural. So if you have a tablespoon of jam, most of that is going to be added sugar, I know, but there will be some natural sugars. Same with chocolate milk. Or Catsup. I assume most of the sugars in processed foods are added, but how do you track this? Just count any processed food as added sugar? |
The FDA recently enacted a rule (2021) that requires food labels to contain an entry for added sugar separate from total sugar. You should track the added sugar grams to stay less than 25 g per day for the average woman. https://www.fda.gov/food/new-nutrition-facts-label/added-sugars-new-nutrition-facts-label |
I meant to add that there is some evidence that naturally occurring sugars found in fruits, dairy, and other foods is less harmful because they come along with vitamins, nutrients and fiber which have beneficial qualities. |
So almond/oat milk would be added, but regular cow’s milk would be natural. Right? |
That’s right! So I only count added sugar and try to stay under 25 g a day. I am on my fourth day. This morning I had oatmeal with blueberries and pecans with 5 g of brown sugar An apple with some peanut butter and a glass of milk. I am going to a restaurant for lunch where it’s harder to know but pretty sure I will have a salad maybe with a piece of fish on top. |
Morning fellow participants! Last night was…not great… as I was picking the M&MS out of the trail mix. So today, I’m going to try and eat more before about 3 so that I’m not craving at 8 pm. Had oatmeal, milk and berries so far, but need some fat soon. |
Oh, I must have looked at old labels! I thought they did but then just checked some labels online - noth there. Great!! |
32 M&Ms has 17 g of added sugar. You can eat M&Ms and still be on track. |
Had the salad with chicken on top for lunch. Came home and had a cup of hot cocoa which had 8 g of sugar according to my scale. Total for the day 13 g so far. Not sure what dinner is but husband does not usually add sugar. Should be on track for day four! |
OP again on track for a good day today. I had a good morning walk and plan to do my strength stuff while on calls during the day. Eating homemade yogurt with a banana and a cup of tea this morning. Planning leftover chicken bean chili for lunch and need to roast some veggies to have around (sweet potato, brussles sprouts, cauliflower).
Here's to a low added sugar day! I did weigh myself at 119.5, so no problems there yet. That's a bit on the high side for me, but within normal range (116-120). |
I am so glad I found this thread! I have been wanting to cut out added sugar and also processed carbs (I hope its ok to add that in)! Today for BF I had coffee with milk and for lunch I had an apple, 2 rice cakes w peanut butter (Yeah I guess those could be processed carbs? IDK) and leftover grilled chicken breast from last night. Wish me luck through the afternoon!! |
I had a square of chocolate - 10 g of added sugar. So delicious! worth it in this disgusting freezing rain. |
Last check in OP here.
No issues today. Kept added sugar under 10 g. |
I read this as low sugar-accountability group and was ready to join! I have very low accountability for my sugar consumption. Kudos to everyone who’s actually working hard to do better than I am though. |
OK, I'm actually having an easy time with this recently. I feel as if cutting out wheat from my diet makes eliminating sugar much easier. I'm not fully off sugiar. I do so love sugar. But I think without bread-based items on the menu (cookies, cake, etc) the amount of sugar that I'll eat in the house is more limited.
There is still ice cream - my favorite - but I don't think we've bought that for a while. And chocolate. I'll eat chocolate chips straight from the bag. And my mom likes to send us gifts and it usually includes chocolate. So I am trying to limit myself to one piece a day. (like a square off a bar). In recent years my chocolate-meter-as-a-sign-of-where-I-am-in-my cycle has reallly intensified. Wasn't a thing before, but in the last 3 years I feel I've started eating more chocolate the last few days before my period. Anyway, just thinking about how this is going. |
