I’m finding the audible version so entertaining, it feels like an epilogue to wherever the Crown will leave off next season. Obviously, like any memoir (or fictional tv show), it’s not the full picture, but still interesting.

Have you actually read the book? A basic premise of the book is that members of the family and their aides have been unnamed sources for quite a lot of what gets published in the tabloids. Harry’s stance is that he is openly using the book to tell his own story.
I find this credible, and it suggests that Harry is the one who’s fighting back, while the “sources close to the family” are the ones that I’d regard as being craven. Not that all readers will agree with this take, but if you haven’t actually read the book — vs excerpts from it in the very press that Harry is criticizing — your perception and conclusions may be inaccurately slanted.

Yes, we know. He is saying this in all of his interviews as well as a justification for saying all the things he is saying. My take is that he is paranoid and this paranoia and victim mentality has been exacerbated by his wife. His wife was planting stories from day one, btw.

This is a great summary. Not sure that I agree that it showed Camilla has been in bed with the press since before Harry was born. She was widely hated for many years and then waged a successful PR campaign in her own favor by throwing Harry and others under the bus.

Oops. You’re right. I worded that poorly. Spare doesn’t suggest that Camilla has been in bed with the press since before Harry was born, although other articles that I’ve read recently — in the wake of the Jeremy Clarkson muck — do strongly support that. My takeaway is that Camilla consorted with members of the press, who released noxious articles about Diana, then, decades later, with even firmer relationships, used the same strategies to attempt to defame Harry and Meghan. I read Spare with this influence in mind, at least as a possibility.

Interesting! If not heard the theory that she was behind negative Diana coverage too. I’m not sure that I buy it though. I don’t think she’d have had that much influence then. Unless it was Charles too.

Also it’s not as straight forward as just lashing out. Clearly their relationship is complicated - the book has many positive things to say about his dad too. He was clearly seeking his attention and affection. He even says nice things about Camilla and her relationship with his dad. Like many estrangements, it’s not straightforward. He clearly loves his family.

Harry and Meghan’s team has taken stories to the press as often as anyone else. They have leaked a ton of stories. Their comms team calls the press or has a third party reach out or leaks through their own sources.

And they aren’t just telling their own story, they are using this to try and also tell stories about family, leak private info, make family look bad etc.

I’m in the middle of the audio book and really enjoying it. I am honestly kind of surprised I like it, but he has a beautiful book voice and the stories come alive.

Not a royalist at all, and have been neutral on Harry and Meghan (though appalled at the racists who hate them). I only bought the book because I finally decided I wanted to see what the fuss was about.
