Depends on your risk tolerance and what else it's mixed with. 20% pit, 40% Poodle, and 40% Golden? Eh, your probably fine. Sub the Golden out for a Mal/GSD/Akita/Rottweiler/Cane Corso/Husky/Chow/Doberman/etc. etc.? Absolutely no way.

IDK. A non pit mix we know has some really trainable breeds in the mix but releases the potential inner hound in many ways. Urge to roam and on leash behavior. One of our pure bred labs used to "ask" or demand to cross the street whenever either of 2 neighborhood pitbulls were on walks on the same street. Same for the neighbor's purebred GSD. Smart dogs got a read on them.

Some pits were brought to the house of a common relative. For the 1st time other dogs on various occassions would not touch any toy the pits used.

And yet another story about these "sweet animals" mauling a child.

Clearly these sweet little nanny dogs were triggered by the boy riding his bicycle. Pibbles are just big ole sweet babies.

I don’t think a pit ban would work (as much as I would love to see one) because the logistics of not knowing DNA percentages. I think we have to tackle the source as a PP mentioned.

For starters, it seems like a lot of attacks occur by dogs (pits or mixes) with known aggression history. Often times there has been previous issues with police called for loose dogs wandering the neighborhood and often in packs. Or the dog(s) can jump the fence or otherwise get out. We need to more harshly punish this. I’m thinking heavy fines for off leash dogs, if dogs get out and are aggressive toward other humans they are immediately euthanized. Criminal fines and even jail time for not spaying/neutering your dog. A license can be granted if you are a breeder of non-bully breeds. But every other dog must be sterilized if not registered for breeding.

And strict liability for any dog injuries. No one bite nonsense. If you decide to get a dog you are 100% responsible for any damage it does to property, other dogs, or humans. I’ve had dogs my entire life and have never had one harm anything besides maybe some chew toys. Don’t get a pet if you’re not ready to take full accountability for it. It seems like even when people get charged for a dog attack it’s misdemeanor charges. Nope. You have a dog that can rip someone’s face off and you don’t prevent that … felony.

We need to make it so miserable to have these dogs that people stop wanting them.

^And to add to that, hold rescue organizations accountable. Maybe if they could be sued for adopting out dogs that cause major damage to people they will be more hesitant to adopt out pit mixes. Any dog can bite, but only certain dogs can absolutely tear apart a child. Let’s be honest you can generally tell which dogs those are without a DNA test.

Rescue organizations have no money. We need to prohibit ownership of intact dogs and prevent backyard breeders.

WTAF! The owner actually admitted the dogs liked chasing bikes. That poor kid.

BYB are the issue. Plenty of responsible folks out there have intact dogs that are well behaved with no behavior or aggression issues. I wouldn't trust a neutered pit any more than one that is intact.

Pitbulls and pit mixed should be banned from parks. They should not be adopted out. They are dangerous. I hate seeing all the awful rescue pitts at parks.

Where I live people bring them to playgrounds, little league games...they always have stupid names like Junebug and the idiots encourage little kids to "give her some love". Just because their giant mouths are wide open doesn't mean they're happy. I write those people off as friends.

A thread for willfully ignorant types. How nice.

No, because they're too busy at the hospital after their stupid dog mauled a kid.

Just saw an article on my Yahoo news feed where a four-year-old girl was mauled by the family pet. Of course the family pet was an American pitbull. This happened in the UK. Neighbors heard her screaming and thought that was just the TV. So tragic.
