Oatmeal

However, it's not bad, and it's healthy and filling. My recipe: 1/3 cup rolled oats, 1 TBS chia seed, 1 TBS flax seed, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, grated apple. 1/2 cup water. Mircowave for 60-90 seconds. Add milk to thin consistency.

For overnight oats, which are great during the hot summers, you need to add a lot more liquid than you think. For 1/2 cup of oats, you'll need 1 cup of liquid at least.

Forgot to add that I do add a pinch of salt, which is important.

Overnight oats are the easiest. Ready to eat right out of the fridge the next day.

For the folks that do overnight oatmeal, do you eat it cold or heat up in morning?

I usually put it in the microwave for 30 seconds so it's more room temp.

I love savory oats of all varieties. I always buy plain unflavored oats and I never add anything sweet. I always use savory spices and often I’ll make it spicy (heat wise) by using a dash of cayenne or crushed red pepper. Sometimes I add a fried egg on top, sometimes sautéed spinach, sometimes a veggie sausage. I’ve chopped and sautéed yellow spinach and topped my oatmeal with that. I’ve done all sorts of things. I always add some chopped nuts (whatever kind I have on hand) and I like to add a dash of vanilla extract also. My kid thinks I’m weird. The other night for dinner I even replaced white rice with oatmeal for myself. I just left it plain and I made it really thick. I topped it with a piece of salmon and some of the sauce it was simmering in. My kid was horrified. 😂

Cold. I use rolled oats, milk, almond butter and cinnamon. Top with blueberries in the morning.

No, just no. Oatmeal should be hot. Cold oatmeal and this refrigerator overnight oat nonsense is wrong

Nope. Cold overnight oats are good. It's just an alternative to eating cereal with milk.

Muesli. 1/2 cup rolled oats, handful of walnuts or other nuts, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, handful of raisins or chopped dates. 1 tsp sweetener of your choice. Top it with almond milk. I sometimes will top with sliced bananas, berries, or chopped apples.

I cook it dry — like kasha. In a small rice cooker, I toast about half a cup of quick steel cut oats in a bit of butter. I add cinnamon and nutmeg. I stir in a beaten egg, and keep stirring until the egg is absorbed. I add vanilla extract, raisins or dried cherries, maybe a few pecans, and about a cup of water, and let the rice cooker do its thing. When the rice cooker turns off, I check to see if the grains are soft and separate. I’ll add more water and cook for a bit longer or uncover and cook if it’s wetter than I’d like.

For a quick lunch or supper, I often put quick steel cut oats in a thermos with boiling water, almond or peanut butter, and a few raisins, dried cherries or chocolate chips. By lunchtime it’s cooked. It’s a very filling very quick meal.

Steel cut oats here, and adding SALT to the cooking water makes a huge difference in flavor.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this.

I eat it topped w brown sugar, a sprinkle of cinnamon, chopped pecans.

I do this too except with rolled oats. It’s ok. I sometimes have to force myself to eat it. The directions do say to add salt to the water, fyi.
