Hell no. Fifth graders just barely belong in elementary school. 6th graders belong with 8th graders more than they do with 4th graders.

How do you figure? 5th graders are 10 and 11 still kids. Don't rush it.

Have you been around fifth graders very much? In the same way some first graders like potty words, some fifth graders are obsessed with using profanity, talking about sex, teaching classmates new terms. Some of them are very eager to push boundaries. You’ve got the innocent ones who don’t have phones or social media or older siblings and still play with dolls and watch cartoons, but you’ve also got kids sharing graphic sexist, racist, and homophobic comments and constantly bringing sex into every discussion.

Sure, some kids are going to try to grow up faster than others, that's not going to change. Maybe these kids would benefit from being in a more kid like situation. I don't think the kids that arebt like this should be trusted into a MS environment j7st because some kids are behaving like the ones you described.

10-12. 9 is a regular child, and not even nearing teen years.

Profanity is real with 5th graders, and I don’t know very many of my kids’ friends who are still playing with dolls, but cartoons are still ok with them, and we haven’t seen graphic racist, sexist, or homophobic comments. There is maybe 1 kid who has behavioral issues that loves to push the envelope, but that seems more specific to that kid and his behavioral issues. Putting that aside, 5th graders are just at a different place developmentally than the mid ES kids.

9 and 10 aren’t tweens.

I wouldn’t count 9 as tween, those are 3rd and 4th graders. I think once kids hit 5th grade, those kids are about to turn 11 or already 11, you’ve entered tween territory.

Agreed.

Lots of different sources on this and they all have different ages. There is no correct answer. I think of tween as 10-12.

Yeah, but none if those behaviors are good or appropriate for 5th graders. Is that how you think they should be? Wouldn't it make sense to try to keep them younger for at least a little while?

I think 0 - 7 is a child, 8 - 12 are the most formative years, imo), by 13 they are basically formed, you're not fundamentally influencing them much in the teen years.

18 an adult. An adult with a safety net. At 21 capable of being a fully financially self supporting adult if that's what is desired, or needed.

OP, a 13 year old boy needs his Father as his main influence. Too much time with you, you focusing too much on him, this is not the direction it should be going.

5th graders are already exhibiting these very typical behaviors while they are in ES, so not around older kids. Keeping those kids in an ES setting for an extra year does nothing to change that. I just don’t think you can artificially manufacture keeping kids “younger” by keeping them in ES. Some of the different behaviors you see in kids around age 10-11 are related to puberty and hormonal changes, and keeping them in ES will have no impact on that.
