Is Maryland a Southern State

Anonymous
I tend to think of the South as the Bible belt starting in the southern part of VA.

If you ask people across the country to name a southern state, I doubt many would say MD.

Why are you sick of it. That is the definition and it doesn't matter how you feel about it.

Mkay, no. Definitions from yesterday don't necessarily define today.

Yeah, they really do. Especially in this case.

Marylanders don’t agree with you.

Despite the Census laws defining Maryland as a Southern Atlantic state - the vast majority of Marylanders consider themselves to be living in a northern state.

Politically, Maryland has much more in common with New England mindsets than southern states.

But Marylanders say no.

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ) -- Is Maryland more northern or southern? The answer to that question depends on whom you ask, but most Marylanders say it's northern.
That's according to the results of a new Goucher College poll, which shows 65% of residents consider Maryland a northern state, more than double the 27% who view it as a southern state.
While the responses seem fairly cut-and-dried, the state's history is a little bit more complicated.
Maryland actually sits below the Mason-Dixon Line, which divided free states in the north from their slave-owning counterparts in the south during the Civil War era.

But ultimately, the consensus among residents from all walks of life -- regardless of age, gender, race, and political stance -- is that Maryland is a northern state.

Consensus doesn't dictate reality.

Yes that was obviously implied by the juxtaposition of legal definitions for US regions including Md as a southern state in contrast to the self identification of most Marylanders as living in a northern state.

There are no official regions in the US. Agencies define them to suit their particular needs.

"No level of government has official designations for regions. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names, which is responsible by law for standardizing geographic name usage throughout the Federal government, is often asked for official names and boundaries of regions, but does not and cannot provide them."

Just curious, what’s your evidence that most Marylanders consider themselves northerners?

In my own experience, most I know don’t identify with either the north or the south.

It depends on which Marylanders you ask. Truth isn't subjective.

But the op’s question is about the south not the north. So answering the specific question, Is Maryland a Southern state, the answer is no. If the op had asked “Was Maryland a southern state” the answer would be yes.

So, it was a southern state until it moved north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Got it!

That’s interesting. I wonder how many of these Marylanders that you speak of are actually transplants?
What would Andy Harris say?

I’m talking about culturally. Nobody cares about your stupid Mason Dixon line obsession.🙄
