Is it unethical to use donor eggs?

I was an egg donor in college ten years ago. AMA.
I love that my donation (hopefully) created a family that wouldn’t otherwise exist. The money was helpful but not the main reason I did it. I hope the family was honest with the kids that they were donor conceived. I do believe that hiding that is unethical. I haven’t seen any data showing that there are long term effects. It’s the same procedure as IVF and as far as I know there’s no evidence that IVF is linked to cancer. |

| My niece started donating her eggs since college. Apparently she is very much in demand. She has done it each year the last 6 years and has been able to buy a home in LA by doing so. Yay her! |

I am the parent of a donor egg baby and I am so thankful and happy that there are people in the world like you. My child is 2 and I love her to bits. We speak about the composition of our family in terms she can understand and will share about the donation when she is old enough to understand. This thread feels pretty toxic (i should have known not to click) but I am glad to see your comment. |

+1000 Another parent of a donor egg baby (actually, babies), and I am beyond grateful and so, so thankful that our donor was kind enough to help us create a family in this way. I have POF/POI (diagnosed at 32) and there was just no chance of having a family without egg donation or adoption. I am grateful to our donor every single day. |

Most countries allow surrogacy. Some only unpaid. The list is only not great if you think european countries are better than all other countries. |

Case in point - I was referred to a genetic counselor who recommended that my mother get genetic testing to accurately assess my risk. My mother refused. I also don't have the right to access my parents' medical records. Also if my mother had had me as a result of an affair - I would have no right to learn about my genetic father. My mother would not be committing a human rights violation because there has never been such a right for any child. There are many many many more children who have an absent parent then there are donor conceived children and none of those children actually have a right to know about their parent. That is why matrilineal descent is so important in some cultures - because you know who gave birth to the child with a certainty that you don't have for the other parent. That being said I choose donors who were willing to be contacted at age 18 because I think it in the best interest of my child to have that option. Hopefully the donors will be generous in sharing any updated pertinent medical history. But just like my parents have the right not to share, the donors will also have that right. |

I think the unethical part is when the donors are doing it for money and putting themselves at higher risk to meet basic needs in their own life. They are still making their own decisions but that decision is driven by disadvantage and a lack of priviledge, not a deep desire to donate eggs.
If someone donates their eggs out of sheer altruism - then go for it |
