Agree or Disagree?: Inflatable yard Christmas decor is tacky

Anonymous
I agree, I dislike the inflatable yard decor for all holidays. Obviously people can do what they want, but it's very much not my thing and feels like copout to putting up real decorations. If you want my eye to be drawn directly to your house, then put some effort into a real light display or something. Blowing up a giant Santa or pumpkin or whatever in your front yard feels like the laziest possible way to scream "LOOK AT MY HOUSE WE'RE CELEBRATING THIS HOLIDAY" possible. And not aesthetically pleasing or interesting in any way.

yes. And I dread these posts every year because someone loves to call them whale condoms, which is probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Surprised to see so many people saying "but the kids love them." My kid loves all manner of goofy things and it's not like she hates holiday inflatables, but she is way more wowed by Christmas lights and wreaths and bows than inflatables. There's a house in our neighborhood that has a bunch of inflatables that they change out for each holiday and the first time she sees it she's excited, like "oh there's the Turkey!" but then she gets bored with it -- "when are they going to take that Turkey down??" Whereas when people do real decorations she's much more enthusiastic and wants to go past them many times to see them.

I think maybe very little kids enjoy these but after the age of 3 or 4 they are over it.

I like seeing them and I’m 53.

I'm a kid at heart and think they're fun. Sorry that you're too grown-up to enjoy them or allow that others might.

I’m boring and agree it’s tacky. Relieved that none of our close by neighbors have inflatable holiday cheer …

Hideous. Tacky. I prefer the older interior-lit ones, but they can’t be safe after all these years. We do one strand of lights.

So much fun. Love all holiday decorations. Yes not classic and elegant but fun. Bah Humbug!!

Tacky unless it is part of the “Christmas threw up here” totally over the top displays where they have a TON of stuff and this is just part of it. But one or two blow ups in an otherwise normal set up - yuck. And we owe colored lights that are a mix up so I am not an “all which lights” house.

Tacky
Most aren't cute.
I also think over done lights are tacky.
I don't limit my dislike to inflatables

The whole point of Christmas decorations is to be wonderfully tacky. Embrace the tacky!

+1 Kids love inflatables!!

I think most people are doing this for the kids, not to impress other adults.

I beg to differ.

The whole point of Christmas decorations is to point us towards the hope that Jesus’ birth brought to our fallen world. I personally find commercial and tacky Christmas decorations depressing.

However, if tacky commercial Xmas decor brings joy to some then let it be.

I agree with the pp upthread who said it’s lazy and cop out decor. It reminds me of inflatables you’d see in front of a seedy used car dealership or Denny’s. I’m shocked at how many of my neighbors have them. Might as well add pink flamingos too.
