Anyway, we need strict gun laws, licenses, background checks...etc. Getting rid of military style assault weapons would also be a step in the right direction.

It seems like those of us who don’t want to be shot by a deranged moron have to move our bargaining anchor.

I no longer care about your need to hunt, etc. No guns, anywhere, for anyone. Can you imagine if our police were like the ones in the UK and DIDN’T walk around with guns? It would be like a totally different country. That’s my aim.

The Everly Brothers had a song called “Dream, Dream, Dream.” That’s about where you are. The idea that firearms are only for hunting is silly. There are millions of defensive uses of firearms a year. And by the way, the British have armed police. They are more than willing to use their guns too, as when they shot a man in the back of the head while holding him face down on the floor of a bus.

Nope, it’s not a dream, it’s a goal. I don’t care about your desire for guns for hunting, but I care even LESS about this BS about “defensive” use of firearms.

Keep going, there are more and more people coming to my position every day. The children who had to do gun drills in school don’t want guns anywhere near them. The future does not belong to mindless death and stupidity. The future is ours.

Unreasoning fear of inanimate objects and fanciful notions that getting rid of them can magically change the human heart are symptoms of a profound mental disorder.

It's unreasonable to fear guns? Are you serious? Yes, there will also be the mentally ill and violence, but I think the odds of me surviving a knife attack are a lot higher than a gun that can kill dozens of people in seconds. Guess that's why the police in Uvalde took so long before they went in after the shooter- they had a profound mental disorder because of their unreasonable fear of the shooter's AR-15.

When you start a mass shooting thread, can you also date it first. We need a naming protocol

SHOOTING - 11/22/2022 - Walmart, Chesapeake, VA.

It will make it easier to search.

This is one of the saddest comments I have ever seen on DCUM. But the PP is right.

Sad, but this sums it up. We have gun crisis and a mental health crisis.

We can and should bring back mental institutions.

There is obviously a huge need for them.

Even if we had institutions, very few of these shooters would end up in them BEFORE they decided to shoot people. Severely mentally I’ll people are mostly NOT violent.

100% of random mass shootings happened after deinstitutionalization in the U.S.

This is not true. Stop making nonsense up. The University of Texas tower shooting was in 1966: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Texas_tower_shooting

What is true is that mass shootings are practically an everyday occurrence these days. Prior to deinstitutionalization, they were much more rare.

There will always be mentally unstable, violent people - they have existed since the beginning of time. Bringing back mental institutions might help some, but people cannot be forced to accept treatment - witness the large numbers of mentally ill homeless who refuse shelter and treatment. The very least we can do is keep guns out of their hands.

For the severely mentally ill, homeless people, your answer is:

- oh well. ??

There is a desperate need to bring back a humane form of institutional care.

I agree completely - but would these people be compelled to enter institutional care? How? Involuntary commitment is not a simple thing.

It’s not, but it needs to return as a common option.

I don't fear inanimate objects. I fear men with guns. Maybe we can take away the animate objects (the men) and leave the guns, because somehow women don't (or very, very rarely) shoot up their workplaces, families, places of leisure, or religious practice because they get irritated. A woman with a gun? Honestly don't really fear it. A man with a gun? Different story.

And safe me the police and military argument. Who do you think they're "protecting" us from? Hint: it's not women.

Because OP is a lobbyist, who is using Off Topic to lobby political support for her cause.

She does this every single time. And Jeff lets her.

I do not belong to the NRA.

It has been more than 30 years since I did any lobbying, and even then, it was lobbying for direct and indirect aid to Haiti.

I do believe in the 2nd amendment just as every POTUS also professes to do.

Please interpret this, like it was written in 1791, when only single-shot rifles existed (and swords and cannons):
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
