Are people still moving to Florida?

Biggest change they report is lack of stress that came with living in the DMV. I believe the market there stays busy in the winter because of retirees. Where we’re looking cooled off very little.

I cannot imagine the schools there and college opportunities are comparable to NE. Maybe if you are in some enclave community with great public schools or can do private schools it makes sense. I am not sure about intellectual vibe there, maybe someone who moved there can chime in

Our colleges are great here and have a lot of diversity.

UF, FSU, UCF, Univ of Miami, FIU, Rollins, Florida Gulf Coast, and more.

BEST OF ALL, COLLEGE IS FREE TO FLORIDA RESIDENTS WITH BRIGHT FUTURES!!!!!!!!

Not comparable.....OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE BETTER THAN DC AND MARYLAND. Our kids are performing two grades higher as tested compared to kids in DC and Maryland. We have dedicated teachers. Our schools stayed open throughout covid (except for about 6 weeks closed at the start).

The vibe is that our public school teachers are dedicated.

Where are you exactly, I would think each area varies, just like there are several school districts in DC metro across 3 states

I did hope that the recent release of test scores would finally put to bed the article of faith on this board that FL schools are bad and DMV schools are marvelous.

The FL higher education system is excellent and basically free to residents.

In the upcoming governor's race you will see that millions of Florida residents will vote against DeSantis and while he may win it will not be a landslide. He squeaked by in the last election by .4% and he has really pissed off a lot of people since then.

We still own our home near DC. Our renters are moving to Florida this summer. Florida is full, people. And you hate it, remember? Stay up north. It’s so much better.

In which town? Nothing is selling in Miami.

We are about an hour from Tampa near Inverness.

OMG, you are burying the lede on how different that is from the DMV

You moved to landlocked FL near a body of water called "Cooter Pond'? Sounds delightful.

I’m only a few miles from the coast. I live near Crystal River which is amazing! We sail, kayak, scuba dive, and hike year round. I can be in Tampa in an hour and in Orlando in an hour. My pool is warm enough to swim in almost year round. (Year round for sure if I use the heater.). I live in one of the highest points in the state. Hurricanes are not a concern for us. We get the wind and rain, but no flooding. Cooter Pond Park is actually really pretty.

I’m sorry you are so unhappy where you are. I’ve lived all over the US and in three very different places overseas. I’ve found great things about everywhere we have lived. But I love Florida. 🐊

Of course your pool is warm, your yards away from the decommissioned nuclear plant.

I grew up in Florida and my friends and I all left and none of us want to go back. Even my parents left.

My public school was awful. Literally took classes crammed in ancient portables that stank and didn't have working air conditioning, so many kids we had to climb over desks, and a kid brought a gun to school. I got sent to private school after that, though I looked it up and today you'd have to drop 30k/year per kid for it. So you end up paying for those low taxes.

I hope you realize that they tested kids in Baltimore, MD, not the entire state of MD. I wouldn't send my kids to public school in Baltimore, either, and I live in MD.

I can 100% recommend Nocatee. The water park alone is amazing. The zip line, water slides, man-made beaches/lagoons, pools, miles and miles of trails, excellent schools, friendly people. We loved our time in St Johns. It’s a kids paradise.

There's still a Federal tax on income...I don't understand the other poster's comments about no taxes. Yes, no state income tax. But Federal Tax is still huge for high earners.

FL also makes up for no state tax with higher property and sales taxes.

Yes. Baby boomers and matures are retiring and Florida is where DC people typically retire.

Plus they tax your whole estate if you own any property there

My experience was also that Florida was one of the most hostile places for pedestrians I've ever been. Huge suburban areas with absolutely nothing to walk to, and the cities are very hard to walk around without almost getting run over. I used to ride my bike to school and literally had people screeching at me that I shouldn't be in the road in my suburban neighborhood where I was basically riding in the gutter and being very cautious. If you tried to go for a jog you'd also get harassed by people in cars, even when I went with my brother.

When I got groped by a classmate in middle school the teachers laughed it off. We had parents trying to ban Harry Potter from the class.

Never subjecting my kid to that.
