https://ggwash.org/view/amp/73159 Also chiming in to say that’s a myth and has been discussed on DCUM before. However it’s true the NIMBYs in their McMansions blocked the Wolftrap metro station, which would have been so awesome for the region. Metro’s internal maps show a planned station there. I worked on Silver Line Phase 1 and know this to be true. |
If you can do basic math, you can figure out that the crime rate increased. There aren't 58% more people in that area since the metro opened. |
Ya but there might be 58% more shoppers. Stand by my statement that the business owners in Tyson’s like having metro. |
Obviously this guy is bad, but the previous arrest is for shoplifitng. AFAIK, no one gets serious jail time for shoplifting. |
| One of the scariest things about this story is that he walked down the hallway, trying door after door until he found one unlocked. Brrr. Lock your doors!! |
+2 I grew up here and always wished there was a Metro stop in Georgetown when I was a teen. Now, I applaud them for not having one. |
No way. That just doesn't happen here. DP |
Nope. Anyone with half a brain would acknowledge the obvious correlation. DP |
You are clearly not a serious person. JFC. DP |
Yep. This first article is from 2016, but holds true more than ever today: Lieutenant Riddle is with the Tysons Urban Team, established in 2013 to respond to the urbanization of the area. He says a consistent and growing crime is people grabbing expensive items from stores in the mall--shirts, pants, an Xbox and fleeing. "...and simply run right out and headed towards the train," Lieutenant Riddle said. Between 2014 and 2015, the Tysons Urban Team recorded a 58 percent increase in felonies and a 34 percent increase in misdemeanors, and the trend is continuing in 2016. https://wjla.com/news/local/statistics-growing-crime-in-virginias-tysons-corner-area-since-silver-line-opened Davis said a fight began inside the mall between two D.C. gangs: the 37th Street Crew and the Simple City Crew, originally from the Benning Heights neighborhood. Police said Settles is a member of 37th Street. https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/crime/gang-activity-tysons-corner-mall-shooting-rapper-no-savage/65-cd47a537-9420-4b6a-81bf-bd533c738049 |
The main reason that business owners like Metro is that it provides more easily accessible government subsidized transportation for the minimum wage workers in the area. |
THIS. Terrifying. |
Indeed. I pulled the MD record for his shoplifting citation in MoCo last month. His address is listed as on Georgia Avenue in DC near Shepherd Park. |

Bad guys can also drive, take the bus, uber, or walk OP.
You remind me of my DH who thinks we don't have to lock the front door because we live in a nice neighborhood. Like bad guys don't know how to drive to our neighborhood. A curfew for males might solve the problem. The rest of us like Metro, thanks. |
Yup. What's the point of hotels having security cameras if they don't pick up on stuff like this? Other points: in the photos of the suspect, the medallion is cartoonish. Everyone: always use the supplementary locks/latches on hotel room doors. They're not 100% foolproof, but they're enough to send people looking for trouble to another target. There's no excuse for this thug's behavior (and yeah, I'm willing to call rapists "thugs"), but we have to live in the world as it is, not as it should be. |
