The voicemail was right around the same time as the allegedly illegal firearm purchase, and Hannity was using it to try to tie those allegations about Hunter to Joe Biden, with a little aboutism in there that if this were Trump rather than Biden, the media would be having a feeding frenzy.
The problem for Hannity is that he underestimated the human capacity for compassion and empathy, and thus did not appreciate how much of the country would listen to that voicemail and not hear someone enabling or condoning Hunter’s behavior, but rather a father deeply in pain about how much his son was struggling with addiction, and just wanting to find a way to help him.
And his attempt to make this about Trump fell flat, because even Trump’s strongest supporters cannot imagine him leaving such a compassionate and loving message for one of his children.
