I don’t get open casket funerals. Am I the only one?

I actually admire these traditions. Why let the body start decomposition before being laid to rest?

Agreed, so weird.

You wanna know what is weird. Watching organ and bone harvest.

Lol I feel the same way!!! I think Jews do death really well. Sitting Shiva, mourners kaddish have been so helpful to me.

I can do you one better, op-- I don't get funerals. I have buried enough loved ones to know that they don't provide closure.

I've made it clear that I don't want a funeral/obituary under any circumstance. Donate my body to science, enjoy the insurance money, and move on with life.

It's possible that they don't provide closure for you but do for people who are different than you.

I have definitely been to open casket funerals. They were not wakes.

I agree, OP. Some people prefer open caskets, but embalming and doing the hair and makeup of a dead person to try to make them look more lifelike is really an odd thing when you think about it.

I don’t like funerals full stop. Cruel and unusual.

It’s supposed to be better for the environment. Only allowed in some states though.

Okay, so THAT gives me the heebie jeebies. I am fine with open caskets. I am fine with burials. I am fine with cremation. I am fine with burial at sea.

Dissolving bodies in chemicals? Not so much.

Please don’t feel that way. Just read the BBC article.

It explains its better for the environment.

Don’t you want to protect the environment?

I have been to funerals of family members that were open, that were closed, and who were cremated. When I was actually able to see them, it was easier for me to accept that they were gone. I could see that their body didn’t contain them anymore. It’s meaningful to me.

I don’t plan to be present at mine

I agree. My 45 yo brother-in-law recently passed away and there was no wake or funeral and I'm finding closure has been harder to achieve.

I don't want my body donated by I want a natural burial in a natural (wool, wood, etc) casket and be done with it. If you want to celebrate and honor me, do it while I'm alive. It means nothing to me when I'm dead.
