Do you think think Youngkin will use accreditation standards to come after ACPS

Every person in this community should demand so much more for the $350 million it spends every year. The PP is correct about data and charter schools for the most part, but the few studies on where they are successful would lend to them being a possible solution in Alexandria, as ACPS cannot, despite funding, educate underprivileged and minority students. Charter schools could give that population a chance.

Charter schools make their parent organizations a lot of money and little else. It’s the worst elements of public and private schools mashed together at higher costs, but considering the number of consultants and thinktank weirdos around here, it’s no wonder people think it’s a viable option.

You don’t get it. No one is arguing against better standards in itself. The problem is when schools don’t meet them, it impacts funding which makes the issue worse. And then charters and vouchers come in to save the day! He wants to undermine public education. He could give two poops about poor kids’ education.

Neither do you.

Great, then explain it.

Explain that you don’t give two poops about poor kids’ education? You explain that.

Troll.

Youngkin is MAGA trash trying to hurt our schools.

You’re trash trying to hurt everyone.

More like a mooch stealing our money while claiming discrimination.

Youngkin is not interesting in a state takeover of schools. He wants to implement for-profit private/charter schools and implement a voucher program to fund them with public money. His plan to accomplish this is to drive public schools so far into the ground (or at least make people believe they are absolutely terrible) so he can build public support for an alternative program that ultimately will benefit the wealthy at the expense of low-income students.

And middle class students.
Now there are no more neighborhood schools.
Costs to middle class skyrocket
You all are headed for the Betsey DeVos branding with Youngkin pocketing all the profit.

Great job VA you destroyed your public school system. IDIOTS.

With ACPS’s poor academic performance on the most recent SOLs, could some ACPS schools be at risk of losing accreditation if the standards are tightened and then Youngkin could use non-accreditation to exercise more control…..

Thats funny. But not haha funny

Seriously though yes, the schools are accredited bc a couple years pre covid they lowered the standards for accreditation. And the threat of the state taking over? That’s an oldie but goodie! Now you know why Jefferson-Houston is a K-8 school. Funny story before it was K-8 , J-H was an option school for the Arts 😂 Of course no one in the right mind opted in and they could never explain exactly what that Arts program was. Anyway, the school had failed to be accredited for 5 yrs straight, it was one step away from state control, if they didn’t come up with a turn around plan. Viola! Let’s spend millions of dollars to renovate and make it a K-8 school. Oh and no one in boundary can opt out anymore

My other favorite school is Cora Kelly which is a supposed focus school for Math and Science. They have some of the lowest SOL scores for Math and Science in the City. A smarter school board would have dropped the math and science thing from the name to spare the school ridicule.

I think charters would be a good experiment in Alexandria because even the wealthy neighborhood schools are bottom tier. Fairfax and Loudoun certainly don't need charters since there are decent schools in those jurisdictions.

What did the Ds do to 'improve it? They redistricted the boundaries to flood it with wealthy white kids to boost scores and give the appearance of high performing and they lowered the metrics for accreditation.

Who would willfully send their kid to a school like that?

The Jefferson-Houston school zone boundaries have not changed in over 20 years. I'm not sure where you're getting your information. They did lower the metrics for accreditation statewide.

The only thing it will accomplish is to pull money and resources away from the schools. It will only hurt, not help ACPS.

They did slightly alter the boundary to much complaint AND they removed the ability for parents to opt out. So the PP is correct in the goal was to bring in more kids who could boost scores. It's not a secret.

It has-but mostly with DINKS or couples with no school age kids.
