The teacher orgs in VA have very little influence, especially at the local level where these decisions were made by local school districts and school boards.

The pandemic disrupted education because of a variety of considerations. Health of teachers was one factor, but not the only one. Health of kids & their families. Limited space to spread out by 6’. Looming winter surge. Etc.

Teacher unions might seem like a convenient scapegoat but it’s a false narrative. A narrative pushed by whom exactly? Voucher/charter hacks? Run of the mill GOP astroturfers?

Youngkin is not interesting in a state takeover of schools. He wants to implement for-profit private/charter schools and implement a voucher program to fund them with public money. His plan to accomplish this is to drive public schools so far into the ground (or at least make people believe they are absolutely terrible) so he can build public support for an alternative program that ultimately will benefit the wealthy at the expense of low-income students.

That's it in a nutshell, but Youngkin doesn't get the credit. It started with Bush's No Child Left Behind. That's been the GOP plan for a long time now, and in every state in which they've succeeded education has gotten worse and not better. And still people fall for it.

You're right, it was the fault of local politicians in districts that were the slowest to return to in person- like ACPS
