Are peanut butter chips nut-free?

Surely you know that PeaNUT butter contains nuts, right?

I know there is a lot of [s]arcasm going on, but just for those people that don't really know, peanuts are not nuts. They are legumes (like peas and beans).

Peanut and tree nut allergies are separate allergies. Sometimes they overlap, but frequently they do not.

Technically you are correct. However, considering the prevalence and potential seriousness of peanut allergies, peanuts are typically the first thing excluded from food options and common usage is that “nuts” is a broader category encompassing both tree nuts and peanuts.

As the mom of a kid allergic to peanuts but not tree nuts, the bolded.

Please don’t be so pedantic that you send in something with peanuts after “no nuts” were requested, protesting, “but they’re leguuuuumes!”

Don’t do that.

As the pedant above, I was not pointing it out just to be pedantic, but also as a warning. There are many people who don't understand the differences. My children have friends who have both types of allergies (not necessarily overlapping) and we are very careful to use clean utensils, serving containers and avoid both tree nuts and peanuts with snacks. If there is any question, we use sunbutter as our alternative spread to be sure to avoid allergens.

But there are often people who express doubt that people have "nut" allergies if they have a peanut allergy and don't react to tree nuts or vice versa. I've heard that before that someone with a peanut allergy was exposed to tree nuts with no reaction and vice versa and some observers then made a big deal about the person faking allergies they didn't have just because they didn't like something. I think it is important that people know the difference and respect both types of allergies to avoid such misunderstandings.

DP, I'd say most people understand an almond is a nut! They don't understand coconut is a tree nut.
