Teacher resignation in Arlington Schools very high this year?

These are not model employees. They've shown 0 regrets about the damage they caused kids, especially the most disadvantaged.

I wish all who refused to work leave and don't let the door hit them on the way out. They've done enough damage to our public school system and should retire or find a new career.

Flat out LIE. Show that data. No I guess you can't.

You show the data saying teachers wanted to teach in person.

I’ll bet you don’t have anything. No one measured so no data.

DP (a parent).

Wanting to teach in person is different than being able to teach in person. In the Fall of 2020, no children had been vaccinated. Some teachers had been vaccinated. Almost all teachers have family members, children and/or elderly, who would have been negatively impacted if the teacher brought home Covid and they, the family members, weren't vaccinated. I fully support the decision made by school systems for distance learning.

Enough with your desire to rehash the past. Quite frankly, you sound unbalanced and you reflect very poorly on all parents. If you wanted your children in school then you had other options beyond public school: homeschool, private school, online pods, etc. The fact that you didn't do any of those things makes me think that you're just lashing out because, well, you're unhinged, not really because of any other reason.

Wow - those poor kids could just eat cake. While public school systems were safely open in the US and Europe and private schools were open everywhere (including in Arlington), these Benedict Arnold teachers are still with their Trumpian "we did everything right." No, you were an absolute disgrace to the profession, to children and to families. Nothing has done more to undermine public school systems more than these disgraceful teachers' selfish actions.

And hardly any kids under 11 have been vaccinated in the US today (less than 30% 5 to 11 and 3% less than 5 years)! Children are at less risk than with the flu. This was known in Spring 2020, when school systems in Europe safely stayed open. Stopped hiding behind our children, you incredibly selfish people.

LOL. The health of a teacher, and the health of her family, is more important than any stupid job. That doesn't make her "selfish," that makes her smart.

I really feel sorry for your kids. I can't imagine having someone like you as a parent.

Totally normal rant full of rational thinking

Parents, teachers not paid enough, teachers not supported, teachers not given materials, teachers required to use crappy programs that some big shot sitting in an office was a good idea but don’t work for half the kids but you can’t teach anything else because they spent millions on their stupid new curriculum, teachers overworked, class diversity is a problem not an asset, the list goes on and on.

People calling teachers Benedict Arnolds is a place to start.

I am a classroom teacher and most of my fellow classroom teachers want out. IMO it’s not the parents alone. It’s demoralizing the way we are treated and “managed”. So upsetting to get a ton of directives from clueless central office people who never come to schools to get a taste of reality. We work long hours, but try calling anyone at Syphax after 4:00…crickets… how about hiring people who actually work with kids?? Maybe that will stop the exodus.

Public school teachers would have unlimited political support if Northern Virginia if they'd actually showed up to work in Fall 2020. A not insignficant refused, letting children suffer (especially poor. kids) while private schools in the same neighborhood were safely open just fine.

So don't be surprised when there's limited political support and parents aren't the biggest fans of public school teachers who refused to work. There's a reason why the school choice movement is at a record high, especially among Democrats.

Your premise has already proven to be false through the gov race that focused on cultural/curriculum issues and giving teachers raises.

Yeah, let's not pretend that DCUM isnt infamous for having posters ready to rush into threads decrying about individual schools because the school may have too many poor kids/kids of color.

Parent here. This comic is SO accurate. Parents, seriously, this is how you came off. So many parents had such a disturbing response during the crisis and an absolute disregard for the safety of our teachers.

As a counterpoint, there were some teachers in APS and teacher who didnt do their job during the pandemic. The parent angst isn't entirely misplaced. Two examples:

My daughter's teacher refused to return to the classroom in Spring 2021 after she was fully vaccinated. My daughter would go in 2 days a week for hybrid and be taught by iPad because her teacher "felt unsafe." Basically she didn't believe that the vaccine worked. For a little kid who couldn't learn virtually, it was a super tough blow not to get in person instruction even after APS "reopened."

We also had issues during virtual. There would be a full class of 7 yos on Teams and the specials teacher literally wouldn't sign in some days. She would "forget' she had class. It happened many times over the year and was never addressed by the administration despite complaints.

I could go on with more examples of significant issues, but will stop.

Did some teachers work really hard and do their best? Yes, absolutely. Did some take advantage of the lack of supervision and chaos? Yes. We're some irrational about returning to the classroom to the detriment of students? Yes.

Were there issues with shitty parents? Yes, but there were also issues with shitty teachers. If you were lucky enough not to run into issues, then great for you. For those who had issues, they were likely never addressed by the administration and those parents are still likely peeved. Myself included. I lost a lot of faith in APS.
