Teacher resignation in Arlington Schools very high this year?

+1

APS poured resources into expanding Syphax, when those resources could've been used to directly impact teachers and kids. In other words, APS spent millions on things like a district-level virtual school and new chiefs of everything, instead of reducing class sizes or doing more to retain teachers and staff. I don't even remember if the virtual school will exist next year, but it was a fiasco that cost a great deal of money.

While the central office was mushrooming, demands on teachers and staff were increasing. So many kids were a mess emotionally and academically this year. Teachers were just told to work harder, be creative, and figure it out. APS is a well-resourced school district. Those resources just didn't get to teachers or to many students who needed them this past year. I'm guessing APS teachers who resigned either decided to go teach closer to home, as many live outside of Arlington, or to go into another field entirely.

No, it is the know-it-all parents who can’t stay in their lane.

Oh yes I well remember the awful parents who screamed that teachers were lazy, "do your jobs!"

and to think, teachers don't want to work in this environment!

Its simple. Huge percentage of Arlington teachers don't live in Arlington because its crazy expensive. Its not hard to imagine them wanting to eliminate the commute and simplify their life and teach in FCPS/LCPS.

+1. This applies to most teachers leaving our school. They want a shorter commute and I don't blame them.

First of all, teachers are exhausted.

Beyond that-

Entitled parents

Lack of support from the higher ups

Increasing demands and responsibilities

Low pay

Syphax hiring people who bring a whole new way of doing x, y, z and then leave before they see it through and all they care about is advancing their own career.

Just send your kids to private school people. It’s a much more personalized option than the uncertainty that is brought forth with APS.

Where are all these magic private schools with capacity close to Arlington?

Why shouldn't the teachers listen to us? In we're a three parent household and we all went to a Big 3 Ivies --- all three of them! We make sure to let our kids' teachers know by emailing from our alumni accounts with our full titles and pedigrees each time!

If only the missing middle included housing policies actually aimed at housing for teachers instead of 1.2 million townhomes...

There is a national teacher shortage CRISIS. Right now, Fairfax County has about 850 vacancies. Compare that to a year ago this time when they had 550. And four years ago, there were 350 vacancies at this time.

There is not one single solution. But parents have to get engaged and demand higher pay and more respect. Colleges are seeing fewer and fewer students enter teacher prep programs. We need to raise the status of being a teacher.

Teachers AND parents are fed up with the unions. Duh.

...and then their kids came to school parroting their parents. The rude behavior from students toward teachers this year was over the top.

Totally agreed. I’m in high school. Most of the parents and kids are nice, BUT- it just takes a few to completely exhaust you. For some kids, our authority is completely diminished and undermined because their parents tell them how we’re no good and don’t know anything. They argue every grade you give them.

Look at gas prices! The raise we got doesn’t even match inflation, and we were behind already. I think this is the real issue here- the pay. I know so many people that would make wonderful teachers and won’t do it because of the pay.

Central office is where good teachers that want to make more $ go to die. And frankly, at least in my department, they’re worthless. Tons of demands from them to justify their jobs, no support. HR is a complete mess, especially. And they all scored raises and two extra weeks of pay this year.

Two extra weeks of paid vacation, I mean. With all that said, I still love this job. I just worry about what will happen if all of this continues.

I thought central office is where they dumped principals they can’t/won’t fire.
