The choice is between Frumin and Goulet. Finley has no shot. While Frumin is not my ideal candidate, Goulet would be awful for Ward 3 schools. Like, you would struggle to design a worse candidate. At least an indifferent candidate doesn't owe favors to financial backers pushing the replacement of neighborhood schools for charter schools.

I've spent a lot of time around the ward in the past couple of weeks. I've seen Frumin volunteers, Duncan volunteers, Bergman volunteers. I even saw Phil Thomas out late at night putting up road signs. I've never seen a Goulet volunteer.

I'll concede he has plenty of money. That's kind of the problem, actually.

This afternoon, a nice young person knocked on my door and gave me a door hanger from Mr. Goulet’s campaign. Paid for by DFER. The fourth time a nice young person (all probably paid by DFER and good for them for getting paid this summer) has dropped by with a Goulet/DFER door hanger in the last ten days. Yes, the outside money is at work in W3.

There is nothing sinister about this. Any individual or organization that you wanted to could do the same. And that’s a good thing for democracy.

No, actually, out-of-state organizations spending millions to influence the elections of a local legislature with only 13 members is not a good thing for democracy. It creates artificial support for candidates who will owe these organizations something if they get elected. Supplanting local, grassroots support and campaigns with massive expenditures from special interests is a bad thing, and candidates who do so should not win public office.

Surely there are organizations that you like who also spend to influence elections? Cannot ban the organizations you dislike but not the ones you like. Sorry.

Not in this race. The only outside groups are supporting Goulet, who ironically, is a Fair Election candidate who is benefiting from both DC taxpayers matching funds AND hundreds of thousands in outside money.

Doesn’t matter if it’s in this race or not. Just as there is nothing nefarious with NARAL having a 501c4 engaged in politics, there is nothing wrong with these folks doing it. Don’t like DFER putting money in politics then you should also be against WTU doing the same. Etc.
