Just for fun: worst/best dishes to bring to a block party

Re. peanut allergies. A girl died at a potluck because she ate a rice crispy treat made with peanut butter. They’re usually considered a safe treat made with marshmallow. Please label if you make it otherwise.

Worst: dated "salads" like Ambrosia or Watergate salads or that horrible carrot and raisin monstrosity my mom used to make

Best: fruit skewers with in season fruit
Pasta salads with pesto/olive oil not mayo
Sliders
Anything in the Caprese salad family esp eith local tomatoes
And I never go to Chick Fil A but their nuggets are amazing so if someone else buys them I'm in

Best - Some one bringing a grill or griddle and making burgers, hot dogs or pancakes. This is my neighborhood.
Worst - when people get next to nothing dollar store stuff but stuff themselves, their kids and their guests to the gills.

you are not the only one. any kind of potluck is so gross. ideally a block party should be catered.

In our neighborhood, the main dish and desserts are catered, and people bring side dishes and appetizers.

Best: Those awesomely awful Rice Krispie treats with peanut butter and the melted chocolate on top

Never encountered these but they sound gross.

“Gross”? It’s just a different version of Rice Krispy Bars. NP.

You can see it pretty clearly from the tan color.

I echo the request to please label if there are any nuts in your dish. After a bad experience this year, though (totally my responsibility but there were hidden nuts in something that doesn’t usually contain nuts), I’m not letting my nut allergic kids eat at potlucks, bake sales, etc. Too many people with too many dishes and can be hard to find the right person to ask about ingredients.

Meatballs in grape jelly is my worst. So so disgusting.

Best would be a really good summer salad with produce from their own garden or a farmers market. Tomato, basil, mozzarella. Tomatoes, avocado, red onion. That sort of thing.

I make a summer “pizza”, using croissants, garlic sauce, fresh tomatoes, basil and mozzarella. It goes super fast. It’s served cold and there’s never time for it to sit in the sun.

The rest of the world doesn’t cater outdoor casual parties.
