you are not the only one. any kind of potluck is so gross. ideally a block party should be catered.

Catered? That sort of takes the fun out of it

Last year we hired a bunch of food trucks to come to our block party. It was great because the food was temperature controlled and less Covid risk and less work.

Lumpia tip: cook it, put it on a platter with paper towels underneath, then cover with foil and cut slots on top for the steam to escape. Will stay warm and crispy for quite awhile.

Something catered like Subway sandwiches or from the supermarket - yes

Some scary looking shit you made at home - no

Best: Mac n Cheese, Jalepeno poppers, whatever someone's grandmother who moved to the US a few years ago made

Worst: whatever healthy, experimental recipe you just read about on Instagram. Leave the quinoa salad and black bean brownies at home.

I don’t want black bean brownies, but I’ll take quinoa salad over Mac and cheese and jalapeño poppers any day. I love when people bring healthy grain salads to block parties. (I usually bring a chick pea salad and it’s always popular.) I don’t want a bunch of cheesy, heavy, greasy food when it’s hot outside.

Best: Those awesomely awful Rice Krispie treats with peanut butter and the melted chocolate on top

Let’s duke it out.

Best - Rotel with HOT sausage; Worst - a Jello dish

Dare you to try strawberry jello pretzel salad.

I was a skeptic, too.

So good! The salty pretzel crust is delicious with the cream cheese part. I made this for my kids last year and they loved it. I had it as a kid at all summer parties.

I first saw strawberry jello pretzel salad at an office potluck some 20 years ago. At first I turned up my nose at it, and then I finally tried it. Sooooo good. If someone put a dish of that in front of me right now, I would not send it back.

I grew up with this too, and I love it so much. For me, though, it's a holiday potluck type dish. Never saw it outside in the summer.

It's an old old party recipe. Toss a jar of grape jelly and a bottle of chili sauce in a slow cooker and add meatballs. A lot of people buy frozen meatballs. My adult sons will make this for sports events we watch but we make a less sweet, teriaki or soy sauce flavored sauce. It doesn't taste like grape jelly at all. The jelly works as a sweetener for the chili sauce. Most sauces contain a lot of sugar, bbq sauce, chick fil a sauces for example.

It isn't horrible and it provides a protein where most people bring either salty snacks or sweets.

I agree. It sounds horrible, and I feel weird when I'm making it, but it's actually pretty delicious. You can use meatballs or those little hot dog things (we called them little smokies, but maybe that's a regional midwestern thing!)

Worst: a bag of *just* avocado pits. Not kidding, I was so confused when this happened to me

Meatballs in grape jelly is my worst. So so disgusting.

Best would be a really good summer salad with produce from their own garden or a farmers market. Tomato, basil, mozzarella. Tomatoes, avocado, red onion. That sort of thing.

Let me guess, you just drink water at block parties (out of your own water bottle, of course).

NP. What's wrong with drinking water at a block party? Our neighborhood block party happens on my end of the street, and I usually bring my own water bottle. I don't drink alcohol or soda. Is that OK?

You don’t drink soda? Wtf?

My wife pours honey and walnuts on them before baking. Everyone always asks for them.

I don’t do this but I make a honey mustard dip for them

What’s wrong with not drinking soda?

Are you at in my neighbor hood?

Psst. I am bringing deviled eggs to tomorrow’s block. If you see me wink twice. My plate of eggs is usually gone by the time I sit it on the table
