How are the kids doing when they catch covid?

Anonymous
My 12yo was really sick on Monday. Started the day feeling ill, and was feeling really awful by the afternoon. He just slept and felt crappy. Yesterday was better, but developed a cough and still didn't have the energy to do much more than lie on the couch. Today he felt well enough to sit up and watch tv and eat. Still has a bad cough. He's improving, so that's good. I expect him to be well enough to go to school next week.

My kid had a fever for a day, stuffy nose and cough for a couple of days. Then smooth sailing.

I have a 3rd grader with COVID isolating now. He had a fever for about 10 hours. Never took anything for his fever. He is coughing mildly. Fully vaccinated and will be back at school Monday.

Mine is vaccinated and boosted but they still had moderate symptoms. They had to quarantine ten days because of their symptoms/ongoing positive rapid tests. Lots of missing assignments... No one else in the house got it thankfully.

Sooooooo.... maybe try to avoid getting COVID.

You need help. You really do. It’s not good to live like this.

You need help given we are in a surge and you are still a Covid denier.

DP, whose son just had COVID - you really do have problems, PP. The data OVERWHELMINGLY show that COVID is mild for the vast majority of children. In kids who are vaccinated, even more so. You can find the random clickbait headlines all you want, but over two years in, we know this much is true.

OP, my son was nauseated for a few hours, and then with some gatorade and crackers, he was fine. Bounced off the walls for his entire isolation period. He's 8 and fully vaccinated.

Good for your DS. Now, just get a complete wellness check done along with a heart checkup. Too many young and old are dropping like ripe fruits all over the world.

Young children are not routinely dropping from COVID all over the world. What is wrong with you?

Bigger threats than COVID to kids:

Suicide
Substance use
Parental abuse/neglect
Accidents
Diarrhea
Famine

Shall I go on?

You can focus endlessly, obsessively on COVID as long as you want to. That doesn’t make you correct or even a caring person.

+1.

You do realize that "long covid" is an American phenomenon, right? How come the rest of the world doesn't seem to be impacted by this, and why does it mysteriously plague middle age suburban women with gluten intolerances the hardest?

Um, no.

Most mild illness my kids have ever had. Low fever, tired. That’s it.

The NHS in England has a whole website dedicated to Covid recovery, and specific post-Covid centers set up for diagnosis and treatment of ongoing post-Covid symptoms: https://www.yourcovidrecovery.nhs.uk/your-road-to-recovery/when-do-i-need-to-seek-help/. They seem to be avoiding using the as-yet-imprecisely-defined term “Long Covid,” but they’re definitely acknowledging that there’s a pervasive issue with lingering symptoms, including the typical concerns seen after an extended stay in intensive care.

As they note, many symptoms are similar to the after-effects of other viral infections, but it does seem that they’re dealing with enough of these patients that they’ve had to put structures in place to deal with them. I suspect there’s also a research component to these centers, so they can gather data and try to determine the true extent and nature of the problems.
